The cowboy being the closest thing America has to myth is interesting, but i would assert that the boxer is a not-too-distant 2nd. More specifically, early boxers. Consider the cultural impact of figures like Jack Johnson (king kong was about JJ!) Joe Louis, and even Muhammad Ali have had on our society and its young history. Perhaps they (boxers) are still too relevant to modern society to garner Mythological status, but they have all the romance, archetypical elements and cultural significance/impact to make an argument for.
