I just finished up berserk, i started watching the versus wolves podcast a little bit after starting reading berserk, i watched all of the episodes on berserk and am coming back to them after finishing up miuras berserk (i am not reading the other chapters till after its done) and ima just share some of my thoughts while it goes along with the vid 30:00 ~ i havent really seen all too many people talk about berserk in general, mostly ive just seen johns vids on it, and anything else ive seen mention of it is basically just all stuff that happens before the eclipse. In johns ‘why you should still read berserk video’ he says that its almost as if miura is taking the journey along with guts as he creates this insane feat, likening the branded guts, unable to sleep, to the many exhaustion filled days as Miura did nothing but eat, barely sleep, and draw manga, it seemed to track and i kept it in mind as i did start reading berserk, trying to see if i could imagine what the man was going through as the chapters and the years continued. Obviously for a project that takes this long, an individual is going to change, the ending that Miura had planned for the story at one point even stopped being the intended ending eventually as he continued to grow and live his life. The tone of berserk is so much more different and easygoing once the new gang is assembled compared to even the more lighthearted moments of the golden age arc. It may be easy to say that that’s just what’s going to happen given the members of the new crew, of course the tone is going to be different, that however completely ignores the fact that its Miura is the one that assembled them all in this way to begin with. With all of that preliminary stuff being said, something i definitely wouldn’t have expected is how much romance cam we get on schierke with her crush on guts. When it first happened i didnt think anything of it, it wasn’t that much of a reaction, i thought it was just what happens when someone that hasnt had a lot of chances to socialize is praised for their skills, the leader of the group is saying good job, makes sense she’s a little nervous, didnt think much of it. Then it happens again with ivalera catching on this time and it seems like, it would be a one time joke, and then, it just, never stops? more and more moments of schierkes love for guts being shown to the audience, she’s the only one that goes to beach at night with guts to meet with skull night and receive guts wisdom. there’s the moment in the house they’re staying at with the towel and the baths, with everyone else in the party there is some sort of resistance before he comes to trust them but with schierke he seems to start putting faith in her even as early as the first time they do combat with the trolls. It just seems to kind of come out of nowhere whenever it happens, then there’s also a parallel with sonia that seems to have a mirrored love for griffith the same way that schierke does for guts. Farnese is also shown to have a kind of crush on guts as well but there’s never any moments of her pining over him or even a thought bubble about it, most we get is a bit of blushing, oh and that one line about how she may not have what casca has, she still has a special secret bond with guts, with being able to hold onto guts while he’s in the berserker armor. it seems like its all just reserved for schierke. And then while writing this i even looked into the other things that Miura worked on while taking a bit of a break on berserk after 2006, and i saw some of what was controversial with gigantomakhia, all of this to say, that despite what people may not want to admit about what is going on, the camera is still there to show it. The shippers and those groups definitely see it all blatantly for what it is. (sorry if this became disjointed at any point during it, i came back to continue this a few times)

I narrated Berserk videos for a YT channel for a couple years and I always felt like I was mispronouncing everything. This was wonderful and I loved listening to the discussion about the framing of trauma in anime and manga.

I started just listening to the audio and for the first two episodes just thought Woolie was some nerdy white guy, then seeing the third episode as a video I felt so much joy! As a fellow bigger Black boy* I was really happy! And you two talking about Berserk and martial arts, what's it's done for you made me really want to get into sword fighting. As I live in Bremen Germany (no relation to fear and hunger 2 I'm sure) it was fairly easy to find a club. I am now writing this with the worst sore muscles I've ever had from any sports activity, but with a bad ass first training with a long sword behind me and I am so doing this now from now on! Thank you so much for inspiring me, you guys are amazing! ❤️
