Let me just say that this is super exciting. It's somehow both sobering and inebriating to see the little numbers tick. And I want to build! I'm preparing to offer more tiers with concrete and exclusive benefits, Like polls! And I'm really warming to the idea of behind-the-scenes stuff. But there are some things to do and to learn first.
The wolf comic is hard. There are 4 pages planned. With the way I'm doing them, I have time for 1/month. And I think people deserve something in return for every time they're charged here. So that leaves me with 1 page and 1 poll that I can start offering in April, March at earliest.
Polls are a bigger deal than I expected, which is cool to learn! But it's daunting and will have a definitive effect on the comics. Four pages gave me space for five characters to express themselves in an argument before posing an open question about what they'll do next. Panning them in bulk saved time. But with 1 page and 1 poll, planning ahead becomes more complicated. And the pacing of the comic will also change. Each page will end in an open question and have to contain an answer of substance to the last question that was posed.
Behind-the-scenes work comes with some legwork too. I can throw around unused sketches wherever I might have some. But if it's to be made for an audience and in a consistent fashion, that means setting aside time to perform reflection on my work for its own sake. (why wasn't I doing that in the first place!!) I think the things that need figured out for this to work are:
- A plan of what to do, at the very least a loose catalogue of topics to choose from. Maybe if patrons are interested, they can suggest topics
- What should be the contents of this? Sketches, thumbnails, writing? Directed practice or study towards improving an element of an upcoming comic or illustration?
-developing a format and style that is pleasing, easy to follow, and efficient enough to accompany wandering thoughts
Wow!
If you've made it down this far, what do you think? What would you like to see in a $5 tier?
