2016-12-06 15:39:42 +0000 UTCI'd say it's a valid critique if the game lays out express rules and then betrays them for the sake of being a dick. Those vines were always leading somewhere. It had become a rule of the game, and the player was trained to expect them to have meaning. I'm not saying everything needs to reward a player, I'm saying if you lay out rules for your world, you should stick to them.

It's this artificiality (contrived for your pleasure) that makes me put down games so often. I won't try to convince that the Zelda school of design (every conceivable act must reward the player, that pathetic player) is ever bad. I will just say that if doing something feels like a waste of time, it means that you already have the inkling that you are wasting your time; if you were good at time, you should've kicked the thing to the curb probably hours earlier.

I started playing both Ico and Colossus but stopped after being so frustrated I felt like throwing my playstation through the window. Too bad though. Because at the same time I love these games partly for what they are and partly for what they could be. Maybe it'll be a PS plus title in 2 years or so. Then I'll try it for 30 min and then delete it when I get too frustrated.
