The Jimquisition: Shadow Of More Dollars

Oh sorry, did you think we were NOT going to look at microtransactions coming to Shadow of War?

Did you think the appearance of loot boxes for a single-player game would escape my Sauronesque eye?

Did you really think I'd not take EVERY opportunity to bash something Warner Bros. has done?

If you don't know me by now...

That was a fucking long comment for a video that featured a dildo bat.

and I doubt the developers working at these game companies actually like these circumstances, I just doubt they're allowed to speak about it. As bunnyhop showed, the employee doesn't benefit from all of this, only the shareholders do.

by not paying taxes these companies ensure that there's less government funds to fund essential services that especially people at the bottom of the income distribution make use of (but these companies themselves too, darpa invented the internet after all, taxpayer money funds a lot of technologies these companies base most of their profits off) At the same time they still collect corporate subsidies (thereby draining public funds) while not paying back their fair share. As a result governments with a lack of funds have to either cut costs (austerity) or borrow money (deficit spending thereby increasing the sovereign debt, not that sovereign debt is that important and we should ignore it if you listen to the IMF) or start inflating or devalueing your currency. But of course all of those measures have various ramifications, Inflation is basically a tax on investment, if you're expected return on investment is 3% for example but inflation is at 5% then you can forget making any money so the creditor classes who make investments actively don't want that. Deflation and austerity are much more dangerous though as explained by Political economist Mark Blyth <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkm2Vfj42FY" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bkm2Vfj42FY</a> as explained here it results in the rise of populism globally, as we see today with the rist of the far right in Europe and the rise of Donald Trump. This is the exact same as what happened in the 1930s in Austria and Germany, politics keep getting polarised as the centrist establishment wants nothing more than to keep their industrial capitalist friends rich while the bottom of the income distribution keeps demanding for change louder and louder (fom both the left and right now) So if you hate Trump, if you hate Nigel Farage, if you hate all these goddamn clowns then realise it's partially the result of these companies deciding to just make as much short term profit as possible sacrificing long term GLOBAL stability in the process.

and as always, it's the press's duty to print the truth and raise hell. And by following the money and income streams these days one discovers a whole hive of scumbags and assholes, all of whom make quite literally too much money. Too much money that allows them to take all that money out of their pockets and fund lobbyists who actively undermine democracy.

Iandrasil

It results in the undermining of democracy as superbunnyhop described in his report on Jesse Frederik's story on tax evasion. full article by Jesse Frederik here: <a href="https://thecorrespondent.com/6942/bermuda-guess-again-turns-out-holland-is-the-tax-haven-of-choice-for-us-companies/417639737658-b85252de" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://thecorrespondent.com/6942/bermuda-guess-again-turns-out-holland-is-the-tax-haven-of-choice-for-us-companies/417639737658-b85252de</a>

and on top of that by neutralising that capital by hoarding it all an only reinvesting it in other tax haven companies they actively harm the economy because there's less liquidity in the system to keep it running, meaning you force people to rely on credit and debt to cover those holes (which is exactly what happened in 2008/9 where people borrowed 5 to 10 times their yearly income to buy a house) Make no mistake this results in the horrible government policies such as austerity because banks and the creditor classes actively don't want to induce inflation because that eats away at THEIR massive fortunes and makes debt worthless (which is where they make all the fucking money, not by having you pay off the debt, they don't want that, they want monthly interest payment income streams that remain stable and last as long as possible)

Iandrasil

but this time they actually end up financial harming the economy with their short sighted economic decisions. The death of fordism is going to have massive ramifications for everyone, all that money that they do not reinvest into the economy to create more jobs, instead they cut down on costs and maximise the shareholder bottom line. The employee keeps getting fucked with layoffs and because of that there are less consumers with a reasonable amount of spendable income which results in less revenue from risky titles as people don't have the money to risk on a game they don't trust is going to be good (so people stick to the most recognisable brands). This is visible in a lot of other industries atm, car industry for example you see the VW emissions scandal which was really them just saving on costs of production by implementing a cheap trick to cheat on emissions tests so they can sell a shite product as if it's a great one and skip out on environmental taxes in the process, 2 birds with 1 stone. You see the same in games now, development keeps getting its corners cut: no proper QA or testing these days resulting in frequent broken releases, games developed AROUND microtransactions to maximise shareholder profits and abuse shitty business practises like the lootboxes that exploit gambling addiction tendencies.

Iandrasil

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFKnv1YzI3k" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFKnv1YzI3k</a> please cover this story, it's very much an extension of the AAA game's industry fucking everyone over.

Iandrasil

I think at this point we need legislation to classify microwagers as gambling and force companies and publishers wanting to include such things to submit to the same oversight as gambling sites.

Torque2100

Would like to echo your sentiment on this! Well put :) Also, you have begun to dislike the randomness of the loot in Overwatch? Have you perchance played a desktop/mobile game called Bit Heroes?

Rawk Hawk

Thanks Jim :) Also, is there a way to get rid of the spammers? Or are they fair game as long as they contribute, courtesy of Patreon rules? I don't see a way to report them.

Rawk Hawk

SIGH... I hate the way that the game industry is taking something I found fairly inoffensive and an excellent way to support a free-to-play model without making things weird, and turning it into this. And, damn, I'm far more tolerant of this shit than you. I actually kind of like it when MMO games will let me buy aesthetics because I tend to be kind of fixated on that stuff and being able to make my character look the way I want tends to greatly increase my appreciation of a game. With MMOs, I can't really blame developers for having incentives like that, if they are consistently providing updates and new content for free. (Even if you bought the initial game for a set price, new content needs to have a market incentive.) This is, of course, presuming that the initial game had everything promised and the later patches aren't just adding in stuff it was supposed to have anyway. I really REALLY hate that other developers are seeing how profitable that can be can trying to make up bullshit reasons to slip it into mostly single-player games and making the base game more tedious to encourage you to skip things. I'm also starting to get pretty bummed out about lootboxes - even in the case of Overwatch, where I don't mind the fact that it has microtransactions in general, but am really getting tired of the tedious randomness of it. You can spend sooo much money and have it result in nothing worth while. It's really just proving to me that you're right about this: if you give them an inch with this stuff they take a mile. It's frustrating, because I feel like there are totally sensible situations for this, but the line just keeps getting pushed further and further... and it's hard to imagine a situation where big companies WON'T just keep trying to get more. Really infuriating.

Kitty Seraphic

I was looking forward to it but fuck 'em, not buying it. I refuse to be complicit in making games worse.

Shadow of Moredough? But yeah, Warner Bros is the Worst now for cramming as much BS as possible into their games now. I hope they feel a backlash like what happened with Dead Space 3.
