Nintendo, The Industry, And The Attack On Emulators (The Jimquisition)

Nintendo is clamping down on emulation, causing sites like EmuParadise to cease doing business. The game industry hates emulation almost as much as contemporary piracy, so this is good news for executives.

It's just a shame that, in a world without emulators, the industry doesn't care at all about archival, or offering a service that could begin to compete with what ROMs were doing.

I wonder if "pirating" games you have no way or no reasonable way of getting legally can be considered civil disobedience.

I was wondering if Jim or Gav had heard about The Escapist changing hands again (it really is a husk of itself, right now). Were either of you approached? I only found out what really went down from Bob.

Also, I'd be surprised if Nintendo hasn't already tried to demonize the used game market at some point. Made me think of the recent SuperBunnyHop video about gaming bars in Japan closing down for a similar reason, and one of them basically getting a retail license so he could stay open for business.

Like so many, SO FUCKING MANY, debates, the overmedication debate is suffering from extremist viewpoints and conflation. Overmedication IS an issue, but that doesn't mean all medication is bad all the time, which is something people like that apparently don't get. Me, I have anxiety issues on one hand, but also chronic skin problems for which I got pills and shit for years from all my doctors. Until I found out I can treat it better with just a salve made from a bee byproduct that costs 10 bucks and has lasted me 2 years so far, might last a third. Vastly improved my quality of life, before I was medicated and suffering for several weeks, now I slap it on, symptoms lessen within minutes and it heals within days. I always feel like I'm in one of those bad scam ads that try to sell you shit on ridiulous promises whenever I talk about it. :x

One of the articles I read on the removal of ROMS from Emuparadise had a comment from a professor at a game programming college course lamenting that his students were trying to find solutions for problems that had already been solved fifteen or twenty years ago because they didn't have access to the old materials that could have provided those solutions. Copyright law hasn't kept up with an interconnected digital world. If you're not willing to support or distribute software for a decade, it should fall into the public domain.

What happened to Duke Amiel du H’ardcore?

I’ve played through the area I voiced for and I wasn’t there.

I want to encourage you not to stop taking your regular medication even to make a point. My mother has anxiety and depression and has been on medication for a long time. She is and always has been a perfectly strong and wonderful mother and I'm thrilled she has this resource to help her with her days as she raised myself and my little brother practically solo. However a few years back she asked her doctor to recommend a different brand of one of the medications because the current one was making her stomach ill. She felt she had to insist upon the change which she hated doing. So when she realized the new medication wasn't working instead of asking to be switched back she got anxious and just stopped taking everything all together (unbeknownst to the rest of the family). It took about a month but the effects were not good (understatement). That abyss you speak of is very real as I'm certain you know. It took even longer to balance things out afterwards. I'm sure you don't expect We Happy Few to take you up on your offer but I would say they're not worth the harm you'd cause yourself even if they did. Sorry if I'm not focusing on the main point of this video I just want to encourage you to continue to make healthy decisions for yourself because (A) I like your content and want more of it and (B) you're a human being and deserve it despite how others may judge you. - Peace and Long Life

Faith and Valor have a good month creators. Love all that you do.

I bought a Switch specifically to mod it. Looking forward to that day. ROM sites will always pop up. Jim's point about there needing to be a paid subscription site like Netflix for video games is one I've been thinking about suggesting to him for weeks now, and of course he's already on top of that one. There really, really should be a subscription site. If it were like Netflix and cost about as much as Netflix, I would actually pay for it.

Jesus, that reminds me of an "Ask the Audience" style show they had one Channel 4 a million years ago where they had all these college age twats talking about "If you could pop a pill and feel better, should you?". There was a conspicuous lack of people that *Needed* medication and an abundance of dickheads that thought they were worldly.

Honestly this makes me feel vindicated in my decision not to buy a Switch yet.

Sigh. There's still a tiny sliver of my soul that hopes Nintendo will wake up and make their Switch online into the Great Nintendo Library it deserves to be. There's no reason for them to drip feed them yet again. They'd already getting my money. There's nothing to gain if some titles never get the spotlight. The shitty e-store is doing that with games that could have benefited them from the beginning, and that's only going to get worse as they increase the number of launches.

Oh and all this is on top of their confusing plan that isn't even clear enough to plainly say if it's per machine or account.

As someone who has suffered from clinical depression for many years now, I couldn't agree with your end comments about 'valuing sadness' more Jim.

Babak Soltanpur

Jim, please tell me you have a way to find out whether whatever voice work you did for We Happy Few was or was not used. That game sounds increasingly like a fucking dumpster fire and I personally think it deserves whatever inconvenience can be thrown its way, especially after those ‘prescription drug culture’ comments

Robertson Whitney

I have an equal amount of love and hate for Nintendo :|
