Grandia HD Collection - Still A Bloody Good Game (Jimpressions)

Grandia HD Collection is a hefty reminder of what a clever, heartfelt, unique JRPG experience looks like. Square Enix could stand to take notes.

I have a history of starting Grandia and never finishing it, so I'm appreciating the chance to finally get through it. It's still really good. Holds up terrifically, with a famous battle system that feels as fresh as it ever did.

Great game... albeit one that really shows off in the graphics department, sometimes a bit too much.

I have genuinely never played Grandia, any of them. So this is pretty interesting from the outside!

I think Jim would be really great uttering the wonderfully awful dubbed line from General Baal: "Die you worms! Together in this burning ship! Aaaaahaaahaaahaaahaaa!" Just a little dream I now have.

I remember when this game came out I was obsessed with it, but I couldn't afford to buy it. So I just kept mowing lawns to be able to rent it once a week from the video store. For all the lawns I mowed I could have bought the damn thing twice if I'd been patient, but I was having so much fun with it I couldn't wait that long.

I've seen many more people talk about the first Grandia. Which makes more sense, since the second one was already widely available on all plattforms and I don't think they even changed it a lot for the collection. Grandia 1 on the other hand has seen a lot more changes - mostly good ones even - and hasn't ever been playable on PC outside of emulators I think. Reviews will likely focus more on it once the (blissfully short) switch exclusivity period ends. Regarding the combat system: a lot of games have copied PARTS of it, but I can't think of one that copied the brilliant skill progression system, which seems downright criminal to me. I hope other commenters will point out how wrong I am on that last part so I can discover new (or old) games to play.
