Shenmue Is The Waterworld Of Videogames (The Jimquisition)

Waterworld was a very, very, very expensive movie to make, and it was a flop. A very, very, very big flop. Anyway, let's talk about Shenmue!

Shenmue III is finally out, floating off the back of millions in crowdfunding, multiple publisher backers, and a wave of hype. Disproportionate hype, it would seem, given the game's market performance thus far.

The thing is, Shenmue isn't all that popular, despite being so requested, and so critically acclaimed. What's more, it's always been very, very, very expensive to make... and a flop.

I'd been thinking of the Yakuza series when 18:52 came around. You read my mind.

I got an ad for this the other day and within 10 seconds, my partner and I were screaming OH NOOOOO. I hope it's better than expected. I'm getting it no matter what lmaooo.

Absolutely! I'm actually pleased for fans who've been waiting for this. I know how it feels to wait (and to still be waiting) for a long announced sequel to a beloved game. I'm still waiting for Jonathan Boakes to finish The Lost Crown: Blackenrock.

To be fair, though... I did LIKE Waterworld, as much as most movies around that time. But it cost so much to make I don't think it COULD have been a success, same as here. And yes, thank god for you Jim..... we do care!

Trevor Bond

Well, as long as the people who bought it are happy, right?

I give a shit Jim, I do. P.S. Shenmue 3 has been alright for me. Yakuza has been objectively better though.

Gage

I care Jim! Do you want a frozen banana? Oh okay.

Oh Jim, I give a shit... You bewieve me dont you? 8'c If I could dip my willy in this episodes ointment for one minute. You said that Shenmue III had been released to little fanfare and surprisingly little marketing, but I've been seeing that smegging "18 years ago..." trailer on YouTube and Twitch for what seems like a several months leading up to it's release. Admittedly I spend a unwholesome, nigh indefatigable, amount of time with my eyeballs fixed upon on the ol' yoobs these days, but I thought it might be worth bringing up to be awkward and unhelpful :3 I've not actually ever played a Shenmue title, but if I'm totally honest I can't imagine playing or even watching a lets-play of any Shenmue game unless brutalmoose was there. Ian is Shenmue canon in my brain ;p

I didn't play the original Shenmue back in the day, but I tried the first one a month or so ago when it came to Game Pass. Seriously, what the fuck is this shit. Sure, picking anything up may have been novel back in the day, but at the same time I'm pretty sure the novelty wore off pretty quickly. I got to the hallway in the first game before I just gave up. Ten minutes in and I knew nothing I cared about was going to happen and nothing I cared about was ever going to happen in Shenmue.

You'll occasionally get some of that on Boston's Favorite Son when he goes off on a tangent. It's good listening, if you're not already... um, listening. :P

Jim I got all nostalgic when I saw the old Peter Pan cartoon series in the background. If you ever get tired of talking about video games I’d love to here you reminisce on old cartoons such as Count Duckula, He-Man, and Darkwing Duck (a personal favorite of mine).

Faith and Valor have a good month creators. Love all that you do.

If Death Stranding fails to break even, one wonders if that will be a wake up call for Kojima to voluntarily seek business help in constraints on scope/design/anything going forward. Not anything we could possibly find out in the short term. I think I am mostly wondering out loud.

It was more conclusive than a Shenmue ending at least.

I'm one of those weird rare people that didn't play the Shenmue games when they first came out but did pick up the remasters and the third game and enjoyed them well enough for what they were, yeah they are outdated in a number of ways, but honestly I find that's part of the cheesy charm. As for whether anyone would want to play a game with waiting around for shops to open, does not seem any more far-fetched then people wanting a game where you mostly deliver packages on long treks with Death Stranding. Speaking of which Death Stranding's sales actually haven't been all that great, the game had a decent enough launch in the U.K. and Japan, but there was a massive 80% drop in sales in the second week and Sony has since stopped revealing sales figures for it, as it's looking likely that with all the celebrity cameos and motion-capture and whatnot that DS almost certainly won't be making back it's budget. Now whether those dissapointing sales are due to people being turned off by the gameplay or by Kojima's name just not being enough to sell a brand new IP remains to be seen, but it looks like Kojima and Suzuki are not all that different.

That ending though :'(

He did a Jim really well too! It was a great video
