TBH, if I didn't get my hands on one at launch, I would have been sad until I realized how little there was for it. If you can't get a ps5 from Sony, I don't really see a point to owning one yet. And yes, they are not middlemen. Thry offer nothing of benefit or value that Sony doesn't offer. They are probably doing something in a legal grey area that probably shouldn't be legal. But. It is on these companies to prevent it from happening. You can test websites against bots. You can test for probable fake emails. You can reserve stock for items in carts. None of this is hard to do but if you are a gamestop or Walmart, your goal is to sell every console you have. If one person is willing to buy them all, you really win. What incentive does Walmart have for not selling 25, 250, 2500, consoles to a single person? Absolutely none. Consumer backlash? Naw. Fines? None at all.

That intro was actually a pretty apt visual metaphor for the sunk-cost fallacy. Bravo! And scalpers are shit. Doesn’t matter if their scalping game consoles, concert tickets, or fucking Pokémon cards. Scalpers. Are. Shit. Middlemen like Tesco are *at least* providing a convenience.

The only time middlemen make sense and provide a valuable service is when there are market imbalances or they ease sales. Think of spices. You are not going to source nutmeg from India nor are you going to set up contracts over multiple years to create a stable source for nutmeg because that doesn't make sense. You would leave that up to a spice vendor who will likely contract to a spice grinder to get you powdered nutmeg. You pay a premium to not have to source, ship, and grind nutmeg. With the consoles, we had companies selling and shipping products. There wasn't a source issue l. There wasn't a shipping issue. There is absolutely no value added from the middlemen. Sony probably should sue them into oblivion for breaking terms and not being an authorized reseller. In fact, my guess is that the warentees are voided on these consoles and that makes these products worth even less than Sony's fixed price.
