Funday Football: Patreon Video Player Version

This is the exact same as the other post, but in Patreon's video player which some people might find more convenient.

I'm suddenly having flashbacks from the infamous "The Simpsons Wrestling", the last videogame I ever rented in a rental store.

Antoine Desgagnés

Hearing Dan (rightfully) mock my team... made a single tear track down my cheek... But don't worry us Falcons fans are used to disappointment. I'll bounce back in no time.

Utterly appalling. I guess we won't be getting real bread.

Tom

I’d heard about the chips before. I think they feed the data into apps for wither Fantasy Football or gambling. I heard you can literally gamble on the outcome of these stats on like FanDuel or something.

Pendleton

I'm aware of that, but you're still limited by what has happened: you can't apply a comeback narrative to a team that doesn't actually *have* a comeback. And regardless, the gamut of possible outcomes is still limited by the nature of the sport itself: no matter what happens, you can never ever have a narrative where team A looks like it's about to be defeated by team B, when suddenly team C runs onto the field and saves the day, because... sports don't allow that!

I don't want to be rude, but you sound like you're not actually a fan of sport, because that's not how storytelling in sport works. Sure, there's a big component of amateur forecasting, but that never takes precedence over narratives describing what *has* happened, and the beauty is in how what actually happens contradicts the forecasting. Narratives in sport are built from events and not the other way around like in writing a work of fiction.

Okay cool video but Hat Dan is gonna f***in' slaughter you next time m8.

I only follow sports insofar as I am required to as a citizen of Chicago (rip my stint trying to be a White Sox fan lol), so this is the first time I’m hearing about all of this. What corporate insanity. The point about sports developing through technology was really interesting though: I had no idea that they put RFID chips on the players to track them!

Kiki

I’ve never fully watched an NFL game but I went to the Grey cup with my family and the most striking thing was the ads. Like every tiny piece of down time is filled with a sponsorship from tires or groceries or cars or something, every flat surface is a billboard, it’s truly nonstop. I guess I’m from a generation more advertising-skeptical but I couldn’t stand it

Xavier Marican

I care nothing for NFL (college ball is where it’s at) but the inherent silliness of the whole thing is super interesting. I vaguely remember the Simpsons game being a thing, but it looks like it was fun to watch.

"if anyone needs me, I'll be in the end zone" is kinda good

MaxMin

Fascinating. Not something I would have ever guessed existed. It seems so insulting to the players if this is someone's way of watching the match. But using the RFID data to create a real sports narrative in a cartoon setting is genius. I'm ambivalent. Has anyone asked players what they think of games being viewed this way? Maybe it's cool to be Bart Simpson sometimes.

xanna

This video was gold! I love quirky subjects like this!

James

I wish I hadn't bet all my money on Hat Dan...

Ross Vincent

I've long recognized the ability of sports to tell narratives, but I never found them compelling because the gamut of narratives you can tell with sports is limited by the nature of the medium, and as a storyteller you're at the mercy of what actually *happens*. You can't just decide that team X is going to have an amazing come-from-behind season, if they end up... not doing so.
