So Am I...

Kevin Merteuil

This is an episode I clearly remeber from when he aired,

Patpet

Oh boy I subbed to patreon yesterday to binge through the buggy reacts from YouTube and now I’m caught up and I’m crying lol time to move onto oth reactions. 🖤

Lex Larae

Anyone catch what Faith referenced in season three? “Isn’t funny how slaying always makes you so damn hungry and horny?” And this episode Dawn says it’s weird that every night after slaying Buffy raids the fridge

Um, I'm a former street worker, if the intent/agreement is to provide a service in which one or more parties receives sexual pleasure in exchange for money, or goods, then that is prostitution. Stripping isn't inherently meant to result in sexual pleasure, or more specifically sexual release, therefore it is not prostitution. It doesn't matter how the sexual pleasure/release happens, only that it does. Rack clearly got off in exchanging energies with Willow, Willow agreed to that exchange in return for Rack providing her with the magic she craved, therefore Willow engaged in an act of prostitution. Just because it's a metaphorical energy exchange for metaphorical 'magic drug' doesn't make it any less prostitution.

Claire Eyles

Not really, under that logic a person could, and many feminist do, label marriage as prostitution. Which is ridiculous. It’s quid pro quo with sexual undertones. Period.

Claire is right. It's a metaphor.

Honestly, it's my least favorite episode in Willow's arc with magic. The hit-you-over-the-head-with-a-sledgehammer "magic is drugs" message is clumsy and overly simplistic. There's a huge departure from how magic affected Willow before. Good performance, bad episode.

Martin Waits

I appreciate your sentiment but that’s not what prostitution means. Prostitution means exchanging literal sex, for literal money. What Rack and Willow did didn’t involve literal sex or money. And it’s very specific like if you look strippers aren’t considered prostitutes even though they are receiving literal money for a highly sexual performance…but not sex.

Alyson was fantastic this episode, the scene where she breaks down felt so real, Michelle did an amazing job too

Marty

It's absolutely prostitution, goods in exchange for services of a sexualised nature; in this case the 'goods' were a dose of highly addictive magic, and the 'service' was Willow allowing Rack to engage in a sexually charged energy exchange with her. Then you have Rack referring to Willow as 'strawberry', which just happens to be an old street slang term for prostitute, plus Willow crying in the shower the following day & the fact that she says, "I did things, I can't even..." to Buffy when she's trying to make Buffy understand how off the rails she was (and Buffy already knows about her taking Dawn to Rack's, and the demon, and the car accident, so what other 'things' is Willow referring to there). Prostitution doesn't always have to mean a physical sexual act takes place.

Claire Eyles

Such a heartbreaking episode. And what a performance by Alyson. Loved your reaction as usual!

Saga

The best thing about this episode for me is a small, underrated Spuffy moment, when dawn is hurt and they’re taking her to the hospital, willow is crying, they turn around, buffy then turns to spike and for a brief moment they exchange a look, there is no even dialogue, but she knows he will take care of dawn and he knows she wants him to while she has to stay with willow. It reminds me of the episode “fool for love” where they’re sitting in silence next to each other. Buffy relies on him, and trusts him, he’s part of her life, weather she’s ready to admit it or not, obviously she’s not, but it doesn’t make it less real. They have the most bizarre relationship ever, and their relationship has changed so much throughout the seasons, from mortal enemies, to frenemies/siblings bickering in s4 to unrequited love to…well, this!! And as toxic and destructive as it is, there’s undeniably a foundation of trust, and an understanding, a connection, beyond physical, that she didn’t even have with Riley, or honestly not even angel. Spike has seen her at her worst and at her best, he has seen her light and her darkness, something she hasn’t been able to share with anyone else before because of the fear of been judged, but she can be herself around him.

Actually most addiction, if not all, comes from a chemical dependency related to the activity. That’s why there are medications that can help with certain types of withdrawals. As for the prostitution/soul rape I can kinda see where you’re coming from but it seems more like “quid pro quo” than prostitution. And this is really deep into it, a magician can’t use magic to affect someone’s soul. This is true in theology as well as Buffyverse lore. You see when Willow uses magic to restore Angel’s soul, or bringing Buffy back to life she isn’t in control of the souls herself but calling on the aid of a deity. So he couldn’t have actually affected her soul.

The thing about addiction is. You can't help anyone unless they ask for it. Because unless they realize they have a problem, not matter what you do they won't stop. It is hitting rock bottom that usually is the trigger that needs to happen for the addict. I have lost a few friends to addiction and honestly, I have only gained back one of those friends because she had to realize her own problem and get herself into rehab and actually work to get sober. Because staying sober is the hard part and unless you really want it the addiction will overcome again.

Kristine Friling

And yes that is the same actor as that season 3 vampire and man did you catch that quickly!! 👏🏽

Addictions always happen when we don’t wanna face our unpleasant, negative feelings. Shame, guilt, not-enoughness etc. I am really wondering what wreck was doing to willow when she had to “pay” for the drug magic. It’s super disturbing and I always think it’s like prostitution, like he raped her Soul. What do you think?
