Other people have already explained that the opening sequence is the Targaryen family tree. But you were correct that it is placed on the model of Valyria that is King Viserys’ hobby. And another person already mentioned that this timeframe is before the Sept of Baelor. King Baelor Targaryen was the most religious Targaryen ruler. And he comes about halfway between this timeframe and the time of Daenerys. George Martin takes so much inspiration from English history. And the most famously religious English king was Edward the Confessor who built Westminster Abby. So King Baelor built the Sept of Baelor. When Rhaenyra and Allicent are in the Sept there is a moment when Rhaenyra is praying that Allicent gives her a really calculating look IMO. it is the only time that I saw what I thought was a real hint of Allicent being deliberate in her scheming. I think they did a great job with demonstrating the stress and anxiety Allicent is under with the fingernail picking habit. Although it does make me queasy every time they give a close-up of her fingernails. I love the scene at Dragonstone, both for the beautiful visuals and the dynamics of what is going on. I think you are spot on about everybody’s motivations here. Daemon is just trying to get his brothers attention. Otto is doing everything he can to prevent that from happening, including lying to Daemon that the king refused to come. And Rhaenyra showed herself to be a powerful player, gaining respect from Daemon and concern from Otto. She also displayed wisdom in her choice of the newest member to the Kingsguard, even if part of her motivation is how attractive she finds him. When one of the knights for consideration was described as having apprehended a poacher, all I could think about is how that probably means he arrested some poor peasant, who was only trying to feed his family. That is the typical explanation for something like that in this world. With the Lady Laena being only twelve, we can again look to English history. If you look into the marriages made for many of the early, medieval English kings, you will find that a significant number of them married French princesses who were around 12 years old at the time of the marriage. Still, we were supposed to feel uncomfortable to see and hear that conversation between Viserys and Laena. And like you, I also love that finale scene between Daemon and Corlys with the cuts aways to the Crabfeeder.

2023-06-15 22:20:34 +0000 UTCThe opening sequence is the family tree of the Targaryen's from Aegon the Conquerer down to where they currently are at in the show. The golden nodes are the various Targ's with their emblems. When one of the 'nodes' gets covered in blood that means that person has died, the blood lines are the children from those nodes. The Old King Jaherys had 9 children and that's the bit where all the lines go off in a ton of directions :D

Him first getting rid of Daemon, making Rhaenyra a temporary heir while he gets his daughter to win over the king. Then this episode we see him keep the brothers apart and makes Daemon think Visery isn't bothered. I'm honestly dying to see all ur reactions to this series, wish u had a higher tier for that lol

2023-06-05 08:54:05 +0000 UTCI have also said this before but this ep really puts on display and shows Rhaenyra as such an amazing female protagonist. I should say an incredible character period, but I feel worthwhile to note the distinction because unlike in many other shows, she is able to make us root for her and prove that she truly is a BADASS but does so without trying to behave brutishly combative like a man, act like she knows it all or with a bad attitude, and coldly unemotional all the time to try to show a false sense of strength...The fact that she is shown as a young girl who has emotional vulnerabilities, but who truly has a strong heart and a straight head on her shoulders and acts with womanly charm, strength and class in a way that mind you 'avoids violence' this episode, truly shows what many other TV shows should take notes on for their female characters in that the fact that she is a woman in that male dominated structure makes her strength, and she doesn't need to act or pretend to be like her male counterparts for the audience to see how strong and amazing she is.

2023-06-05 04:11:53 +0000 UTCI'm glad that you picked up on the fact that while Dameon is presented as an 'antagonistic' force in the circumstance...It's a lot more complicated than that and not what it seems. What comes through is that Daemon truly cares about his family, and goes through the effort of provoking his sibling in order for him to assert dominance as strength and king on behalf of the Targaryen House, he's picked up on the manipulating game transpiring and wants Viserys to clearly make a move and prove himself, even if he had to take Dragonstone and after a year of the king doing nothing steal an egg...And also why he asked where was the King, because he clearly wanted his brother to confront him and colloquially 'show some balls'...But it turns out that instead he finds Rhaenrya who clearly stands up in a way that Daemon immediately respects and admires and clearly would have never hurt her....The biggest mistake of Viserys who means well, is that while as he says he wants to secure his family from external threats and ennemies, he does not compute that the scheming and manipulation and the true enemy could and comes from within his own council and allies, and that has consequences because he has accepted to listen to Otto etc instead of relying on his own present family.

2023-06-05 04:04:14 +0000 UTCHouse Velaryon is indeed of Old Valyria like the Targaryens, and there is some texts that suggest they established themselves in Westeros (on the island of Driftmark) before the Targaryens moved to Dragonstone (which is very close to Driftmark). In fact Driftmark is actually closer to King's Landing than Dragonstone is. And Corlys is also known as the Sea Snake, as they mentioned. Their house is at this time the wealthiest house because of all the voyages Corlys has done throughout the known world, including far into eastern Essos and bringing back all sorts of treasures and riches. There's actually a 3rd house that descends from Valyria but they are hardly mentioned probably cause they were never as powerful or wealthy as Targs and Velaryons. This 3rd house is House Celtigar.

2023-06-04 22:26:25 +0000 UTCDaemon just wants his brother's attention lol. He made up a bunch of lies and stole an egg just to get his brother to come to him. And it would have worked as Viserys wanted to come except Otto knows that if the king goes it is likely that the two brothers will make up. Otto just wants to provoke Dameon into violence, so that he will be an enemy of the King.
