How to know what editing style to use

Editing on youtube gets interpreted as "how do i add a fart sound effect to my video" and a lot of people consider "good editing" to be a video that has a lot of visual assets and sound effects that clearly took some time to paste into the video.

One thing I think gets lost about editing on the internet is the inherent storytelling that editing a video serves to accomplish. Before someone can learn "how" to edit a video they must first learn "why" they are editing a video. When do you cut something out vs. when should you add something in.

The timing of these edits and the decisions made can shape the entirety of the tone and personality of a video completely subconsciously. Editing can result in videos that feel far too fast-paced and frantic for a personality or creator that is neither of these things. It is important to match your editing style to the content you make.
