The Fly

The non-quantum teleportation experiments had been going well, too well perhaps in hindsight. When things are working easily, there's a human tendency to become lax, become less attentive. The latest round of experiments were going unbelievably well, they'd pushed the mass limit up again (to 50mg!). Corrine was just preparing her test subject (just a housefly ... an all too common creature). It was safely unconscious (but not dead ... what's the point of teleporting inert matter) and in the transmit chamber. Corrine did a cursory check of the readings, all seemed well. The obligatory siren to warn everyone that teleportation was in progress (silly government restrictions). A countdown from 10 and ...

Her world exploded. The equipment became a mass of ultra-hot, ultra-dense plasma from who knew where. She was right by the equipment instead of safely behind the barrier (took too much time, don't ya know?) She turned and ran, but she wasn't running ... she was flying! Behind her the entire lab was coming apart, burning. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion.

Finally she slowed, and landed strangely upright on a glass surface. It was then her vision (an odd combination of facets and normal vision) caught sight of her reflection. In horror, she took off and watched her reflection do the same. Somewhere, back in that molten mass that had been the research lab, lay her body. And Corrine? She was more fly than human. How would she get her predicament across to her colleagues without getting swatted?

Inspired by the 1958 Vincent Price movie of the same name.
