Harvard student from Norway plays 10 people in chess, simultaneously, while blindfolded. Crazy! https://www.instagram.com/reel/DFm01n6uN97/?igsh=MWNldDdvcnd1bjF3bQ==

Mama Browsss

He always looks younger than he is in shows but I feel this one they did a good job of making him look mature.

Great reaction! I'm glad you guys are warming up to the mother. Also, yes, Townes is gay.

Am I the only one hopping on chess.com after every episode?

Pudgey is definitely talking about Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Benny) being in Love Actually as a child actor!!!

Great reaction. You guys are cute -- individually and together. Before my comments on this episode, can we take a minute to acknowledge the killer music. It's the late 60s and it's a vibe! Also, Beth is making money and she knows how to pick out a killer wardrobe. Good stuff from that era. So, a couple comments. 1) My take on Mr. Scheibel is that he was perhaps told to not interact with Beth anymore. 2) I am sure Townes is gay as is Roger. Am pretty sure they are a thang. I didn't get the feeling that Beth is sore about it. Her focus is chess. 3) I liked seeing Beth take her mom's hand here and there. And especially in the car after loosing to Benny. That was a tough time and I'm glad she had someone with whom to find comfort. Even more than that, my take on her holding her mom's hand is that despite her background, I interpret this to mean she is capable of opening her heart and not living closed off, hiding her feelings and past sadness behind a chess board. Was a great episode.

I like the dynamic with Beth and her mother. Beth is surprisingly well adjusted considering her history of losing her mother to attempted murder/suicide and living in an orphanage where she was medicated and learned to use it to cope and hone her skills. . Also, it seems Beth's birth mother was unpredictable such as jumping in the water in front of her and going under for a few seconds instead of saying I am going to swim over to that dock. The chess board is Beth's playground and she does well to master it, but she had to lose to work harder if she plans on going to Russia someday. I loved the expression on Beth's mother's face when the interviewers started asking Beth potentially painful questions about her past. Mom rolled her eyes and asked them to leave. I feel like Beth mirrors her mother with her straightforwardness, coping with the drinks and pills, and both not putting up with nonsense. Mrs Wheatley is a good example of someone who was afraid to use her gifts in front of others, but Beth will not make that mistake.

One thing this show does really well is creating an atmosphere where we’re always expecting the worst from others. Take the mother, for example, she's always numb, we never actually see her doing anything bad, but something about her attitude keeps us on edge, as if she’s about to do something bad but it never happens. That said, I appreciate the effort she's been making and you can see that they're connecting. I also think it was absolutely necessary for Beth to lose a game. It’s an important lesson, and she had to learn it at some point. Great connection between chess and Beth’s life, she’s been in situations where she had zero control, and that kind of instability can really shake a child’s sense of security. That’s why she has such a deep need to win and be in control. And that’s exactly why I love this show so much. Once again, it’s so much more than just chess!

The actor for Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) was Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones. That's where you know him from. My only complaint to these reactions is that the episodes are too short and I need more, now. 😭

TT

yess I love Benny :):)

Romane Sébilo

They're not hating on the mom at all. They say that they are just getting used to the dynamic. They were just worried that the mom would be taking advantage of Beth, but by the end of it, they see it differently.

Jose

the mothers obesession with money reminds of a certain greek australian's obsession with youtube views. ;p
