The Queen's Gambit Episode 4 Uncut Reaction

Comments

Good point the story is told mainly from her point of view

AlrightThere

such a powerful episode! That moment at the end - such great acting

I was a child in the 70s, and I remember Russian athletes wanting to defect at various sporting competitions and the Olympics when they was held in the US. I would ask my parents why people wanted to leave the USSR, and I never understood it at the time, but they didn't explain communism or oppression to me. Sad when Mom died. The husband was so cringe. Beth had to grow up fast and mom's death could be a good thing for Beth in the long run. Hepatitis comes in various strains. They didn't discover Hepatitis C until the 1970s, and didn't have much in the way of treatment for Types A and B. It is a fairly silent killer. Most people don't know they have it until it gets advanced. With all of Almas drinking, she probably sent the disease into overdrive.

Borgov being from the Soviet Union meant he played a certain style. I won't go into detail since it would be spoilery. There's a reason why the Soviet Union were the main reason why the Nazi party was defeated. They are a force.

FYI we haven't seen Shaibel because Beth hasn't seen Shaibel.

Michael Weiner

The KGB accompanied all so-called celebrities (chess masters, musicians, dancers, orchestras, etc.) out of the country to be sure they didn't defect, or that they weren't "influenced" by the "evil" Western ways of life.

Más is more in Spanish, so yes, Beth was not only obtaining pills but asking for more than what the pharmacy gave her initially. I’m glad to see you guys are enjoying this series! As someone who has struggled with substance abuse in the past, I think the show handles the topic really well. Excited to see you continue it!

Another great reaction. Some comments on your questions. 1) Más = More in Spanish. 2) Mom's hepatitis is most likely caused by her being a big boozer. A lush. It can be caused by other things, but alcohol seems to be the cause here. 3) Mom was likely not feeling her best, laid down to read, and simply died. As Spartan said, she likely didn't even know that was about to happen. 4) Mom gave Beth an engraved Bulova watch. 5) Mom's and her Mexico City penpal had a glorious fling. A glorious fling is a gift. Wanting the relationship to be more can sometimes be trying to make the gift a bigger gift. And that can be a bummer. Sometimes the gift is the gift. 6) The KGB! Yes, this was during the Cold War when the USSR was quite the thing. It was the USSR then, not Russia. Russia was part of the USSR. Many, many, many people defected from the USSR (aka the Soviet Union). There are two names that are more part of pop culture who defected, Rudolph Nureyev and Mikhail Baryshnikov, two world class ballet dancers. Nureyev is no longer with us but Baryshnikov is. The KGB would sometimes go on tour with famous people or accompany others who were out of the USSR for meetings and such. They did this to ensure the Soviet citizen could not go off on their own to defect. Defecting would be, for example, going to the embassy of the country where you want to defect to, and request asylum. Or, if you wanted to defect to the country you were currently in, meet with government officials there to request asylum. Ah the Cold War. Good times, good times. (kidding.) Final Comments: I agree with Spartan who noted how the mom had a pretty good final act. She had wonderful time with a handsome Mexico City penpal (I'm forgetting his name), she enjoyed lots of margaritas, she played the piano in the lobby to an appreciative audience (I don't know who was actually playing but it really was beautifully done), she got to enjoy Beth's successes there, and she died reading a book. I liked her. Despite her life's challenges, she was always optimistic.

Yes Spartan, you understood the KGB well. Under the Soviet Union, it was very hard to leave the country in those times. You needed a permission of the Soviet Government and a special exit visa. People didn't have passports to just travel freely. Running away from the country was considered treason. So in Borgov's case, the government would want him to represent Russia on an international stage (because he's the goat) but he would travel under the governments (KGB) supervision. Play and come back.

So sad that Beth's mother passed away. You could see that their relationship was growing. They had a strange dynamic, but they definitely worked well together and complemented each other. It's interesting to see how Beth reacts to all these difficult situations, always maintaining her composure, even seeming a bit cold, though we know she's hurting. I think the only time we really see her unravel is when she's losing a chess game, and even then, it's barely noticeable. Her life has certainly not been easy, but I'm glad that she and her mother were able to share some good moments before this happened.

Loren

Very excited for this one. Quick correction. She lost to Benny. The reason she was co-champion was because Benny drew with other players earlier in the tournament. If Beth drew with Benny, she would have been outright champion, but she lost so they share the trophy.

Farbod

Bit of a slower episode I think, but crucial for Beth's character development. I think you're confused about the final game in episode 3 though: That tournament wasnt a knockout format, but decided by total points scored. Beth had a one-point lead going into the final game, but was straight up defeated by Benny, allowing him to equalize in total points, and therefore splitting 1st place.
