We take copyright law very seriously, so you will have to sync up our reaction to your own version of the show/movie. To help, we have a range of guiding tools throughout the reaction to help you sync up with us, including a small snippet of the scene to ensure you are in sync.  Any instances in which you see the screen cut, this means we’ve had technical difficulties or have skipped a potential disruptions/bloopers. This means you will need to sync up your copy of the show again, if we are unable to edit these cuts seamlessly into the next scene. An updated timecode will be provided on the screen.  Anytime we pause, there will be timer/countdown on screen to prompt you. So if we’re about to pause, there’ll be a countdown, and you are expected to pause as the number reaches 0. The same will happen when we press play after pausing. I think that might be the point! Like we all see him as this nerdy little dude but in the CHESS world he’s seen as this super cool ladies man

Such a good ep and reaction!

I felt Beth's pain when returning to her house without her Mom. It is such an empty feeling. I had a grandmother who was like a second mom to me. I stayed with her every summer and we visited a lot. After she and my grandfather passed (within 2 months of each other) my mom and I went and stayed at their house. My mom had to take care of some business things for the estate. It was so strange being in their house without them. It was before I got sober (I was only 17 at the time) and I remember being drunk a lot after they passed away. I do love Beth's laser focus on chess to the detriment of what possibly could be a relationship with Beltik, although I think he wouldn't be challenging enough for her. Benny setting his boundaries with her was also a good thing because both he and Beltik reminded her of how she could really go downhill with the pills and alcohol. I think Beltik lost interest when he saw the pills. Also, Benny drinking with her and seeing how much she could put away is a clear sign of her high tolerance and potential alcoholism. Beth had no one object to her use of pills and booze before. Mom was oblivious due to her own addictions.

I disagree to be honest I think this show finally did a good job of making this actor look mature. I think he’s a badass and that “nerd” he’s talking to looks nothing like him. It doesn’t feel forced at all to me

AlrightThere

I don't dislike the actor. I quite enjoyed him in game of thrones. But yes, he always (this role included) looks younger than he is. I just don't see a case to be made that he fits the "tough, intimidating, ladies-man" that the show pretends he is. It feels almost intentionally done, but i dont know what the reason would be for that since they play it so earnestly. He is exactly what people would think of when they think of a "nerdy" chess player yet he makes a joke about someone who looks identical to him being typcial nerd looking. It's not actually a problem and this show is top tier. Its just funny.

I remember watching Hikaru blindfolded multiple times being able to beat the botez sisters who are chess masters themselves. I find it crazy how they can literally picture the board exactly in their heads and every move that follows. That photographic memory people have I find it astonishing! I love what you mention there as every game in this show that gets screen time is a real chess match. Theres some cool reviews on youtube of real high level chess players reviewing these games and their symbolism. A famous one is Magnus reviewing the game between Beth and Townes

AlrightThere

Honestly I'm kinda glad you brought this up but for the wrong reasons. This actor has always looked younger than he's meant to be. Everything I've seen him in he's played a younger guy. However, I actually disagree with you. I think he's playing a character for once who is the same age as he is in real life and does a great job. That's just how I see it

AlrightThere

I'm glad Spartan picked up on that little interview with Borgov. He's portrayed as the big bad villain or the end game in this world but deep down he's a human too. He seems quite humble about the future.

I love this show so much. The only one negative for me is, I just cannot take the actor for Benny seriously as far as how he is supposed to be viewed in the story as like a tough, cool, edgy guy. He just looks like a 12 year old. Especially this episode where he tells the very similar looking nerdy guy that he is what people think of when they imagine a chess player. It makes me laugh every time, haha.

yes she won, but I was referring to the fast chess game where she lost several times in a row. From what I understand, the apology was for the money since she paid whenever she lost

Loren

absolutely ♥ this show!

I thought Beth won the final game in competition against Benny... In the bar afterwards, Benny expressed regret about having made a certain move.

I love Benny :):)

Great episode and love the reactions! As a big time chess fan there are so many cool little nods towards real world chess world and culture in these episodes. Almost every player (aside from the people they are playing with) mentioned in the show (and their backstory) is based on real history. Alekhine, Morphy, Spassky, Capablanca etc. are all former chess champions. Every well versed chess player studies their past games even today. Sometimes 100 years after the games were played. Both Alekhine and Morphy also did in fact go rather insane. All these variations from Sicilian to Queen's Gambit, Rossolimo to Ruy Lopez are known theory of chess and a great way to quickly highlight details about what happened in these games to people more familiar with chess, without taking away too much time from storytelling to bore not so chess enthusiastic viewers. It's cool that you can enjoy this show without really knowing almost anything about chess, but if you do, it adds so many different layers to the fans of the game. Speed chess is very popular mode of chess these days (especially online), where the rules are usually that both sides have only anything between 1 to 10 minutes on their clock to make all their moves, where as in classical chess you usually have between 90 to 120 minutes. Very different game. A player more experienced in speed chess could easily have an advantage even against a "stronger" player in classical chess (as in the case of Benny vs. Beth here). Holding simultaneous exhibits (playing multiple people at the same time) and playing blindfolded are pretty common amongst high ranked players and young chess prodigies. I once watched a YouTube video of the former chess world champion Magnus Carlsen playing three opponents on three different boards simultaneously while being blindfolded. So he had to remember every move and every position on every different board at the same time while visualizing everything inside his head. Yet, he beat every opponent with ease. It's insane what these top chess grandmasters can do when it comes to chess. For anyone interested, I recommend checking out Magnus Carlsen Blind & Timed simul on YouTube.

Always fun to see a movie or series scene with luggage. And how easy it is to carry it. In this case, there is Beth with her no-wheels luggage and that of her mom, in the rain, from taxi cab to house, and zero struggle. Always gives me a chuckle.

Dónde está la biblioteca

I really liked the pacing of this episode, the storytelling is top-notch. The show isn’t afraid of losing our attention, even in these “quiet” episodes where nothing major happens, yet you’re still completely hooked. I was also expecting a darker episode. I thought Beth would struggle more with losing her mother, but they took things in a totally different direction. I love Benny and Harry, two chess players who tell Beth exactly what she needs to hear, each in their own way. Also, even though Beth got mad about losing the fast chess game, she seemed excited to have played (and lost) against Benny. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but it definitely felt like she enjoyed the challenge. Either way, can’t wait for the next episode… but also kinda sad that we’re almost at the end!
