Well, her biological mother tried to murder her, so it's a low bar to clear! :P

Why would he run away? Communist USSR wasnt a fun place to be in that time period. It was common for high profile Russians to try to defect to other countries.

Benny did beat her, Beth resigned, which means she conceded the loss. But they tied for the overall championship due to Benny having tied others earlier. While Beth had only won up to that point.

Poor Alma likely died suddenly of complications from untreated hepatitis, either caused by, or made worse by her heavy drinking (+smoking didn't help). It might have been straight liver failure or a blood clot. She probably just felt unwell, laid down to rest and never woke up. It wasn’t from her Mexican lover (hepatitis doesn’t advance that quickly), this was years in the making. What I loved about Alma was how genuinely proud she was of Beth’s talent and success, even though she was frustrated at how her own dream of being a serious concert pianist was unfulfilled and stifled. She wasn’t jealous of Beth, but rather energized by helping Beth succeed where she hadn’t been able to. Also, encouraging Beth to enjoy and experience life’s pleasures (not just chess obsession) was spot on. I know they never had a traditional mother-daughter relationship, but that beautiful advice was actually great parenting by a mother to a young adult. IMO, Alma was a truer mom than Beth’s biological mother.
