I would like to suggest that there are some serious religious themes going on. The whole concept of heroes is akin to gods who derive their power from worship, but the aliens and X are ABOVE this power, and X has the power of a REAL GOD, which does not depend on believers.

Given that the incident happened after Lin Ling pitched his populist ad campaign, Nice may have planned for Lin Ling to replace him. Actually, the whole trajectory of Lin Ling’s arc could have been orchestrated to make Lin Ling popular.
