I wish the show explained the whole Old Kingdom vs Aureatia conflict better. It gets a quick intro in the novel but got cut for time in the show. Long story short there used to be 3 kingdoms, 2 fell to the True Demon King, a massive amount of survivors moved south with their wealth and weapons and created a new country Aureatia, a lot of nobles and soldiers from the third kingdom got excluded from the new government and became rebels.
