This is from the perspective of someone who "specializes" (for lack of a better term) in fanfiction: Who's the target audience for fanfiction? People who enjoy a universe so much and are frustrated that no more content is available will either create their own or consume content created by others. Who's a crossover for? People who feel the same, but across more than 1 universe, and want those universes to collide or intersect. Good fanfiction, irrespective of the type, shares that the author is one of those people who really understand the universes they are dealing with. In a crossover, they've accepted the extra challenge of creating a whole new universe that is compatible with the source universes they are working with. I look at Isekai Quartet and see an author who really understands the universes they're weaving together, does so successfully, and, for some reason, has both excellent art AND animation to go with it. Without the art and animation, Iseakai Quartet already scratches the itch for those who just want to see these characters interact; it has no business also being a well-drawn, well-animated show on top of that. That's just icing for the haters. Put that all together, and you get a good show with a built-in cult following and a plot premise that would be absurd in any other "regular" anime. Put another way: Isekai Quartet checks all the boxes for being an average anime, but then gives you all this extra on top: awesome art and great animation, easily putting it into the category of great anime.
