2025-07-22 20:42:02 +0000 UTCNow that Launch is back, I guess now would be a good time to share some news related to her character that broke fairly recently: During the Japanese podcast "KosoKoso" hosted by Toriyama's old editor Kazuhiko Torishima and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Hori, Launch's Japanese VA (Mami Koyama) made a guest appearance and gave an explanation as to why the character did not appear much after OGDB. According to the translation of her comments, Koyama had recalled that she needed to leave abroad for one year. She informed Toriyama that due to her one year absence, she would not be able to voice Launch and kindly asked him to refrain from using the character in the manga during her leave. Since this information has come out, there's been a fair bit of discussion in the community. Discussion largely centered around questions as to why Toriyama never provided this explanation when questioned about Launch's disappearance and why Koyama has only just recently decided to say this. Not gonna act like I have any definitive answers for you bc I simply don't have enough information to give any. Cultural standards and procedures surrounding VAs are different in Japan than how things are here in the U.S. and I never knew any of these people personally, so I'm in no place to say as to why Launch wasn't able to return after Koyama's one year leave.
