The Enabler- Chapter 4

Lucas had been diligent in his efforts to make Kevin’s life as comfortable as possible. After work each day, he would bring home bags filled with greasy fast food—cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, and fried chicken—ensuring that Kevin always had a hearty dinner waiting for him. The once sparsely stocked kitchen had transformed into a shrine to indulgence, with takeout containers and snack wrappers becoming a common sight.

Every evening, Lucas would cheerfully place these fast food feasts on the kitchen table and urge Kevin to dig in. “I thought you might be hungry after a long day of relaxing,” Lucas would say with a grin. “Why not treat yourself to a little extra tonight?”

Kevin, who had become accustomed to this routine, would eagerly devour the food. His previous hesitations had melted away, replaced by a resigned acceptance of his new lifestyle. The combination of Lucas’s encouragement and the constant influx of delicious, calorie-dense meals made it easy to indulge without concern.

One evening, as Kevin settled onto the couch with a new game expansion pack Lucas had bought him, he noticed Lucas pacing around the apartment, a slightly mischievous glint in his eye. Lucas had also begun to subtly encourage Kevin’s laziness, frequently suggesting they skip their planned outings and instead spend the day lounging and playing games. He had even gone so far as to cancel Kevin’s gym membership without mentioning it.

“Hey, babe, I got us something new for the game,” Lucas said, holding up the latest expansion pack. “I figured you’d want to try it out. We could spend the whole day exploring the new content.”

Kevin smiled, his excitement tempered by a flicker of guilt. “Thanks, Lucas. I appreciate all the new stuff. It’s just… I feel like I should be doing more. Like, maybe getting a job or something.”

Lucas’s face clouded slightly, though he quickly masked it with a reassuring smile. “You don’t need to worry about that. We’re doing just fine. I make more than enough for both of us, and you deserve to relax and enjoy yourself. Besides, you have me to take care of you.”

Despite the comfort Lucas provided, Kevin couldn’t shake the growing unease about his dependency. The sense of self-worth tied to employment and productivity tugged at him. One day, feeling particularly restless, Kevin decided to act on these concerns. Without telling Lucas, he ventured out to apply for jobs.

He spent the afternoon filling out applications, hoping to find something part-time that would give him a sense of purpose and some financial independence. Exhausted but determined, he returned home that evening, his thoughts already racing about potential job offers.

As Kevin walked through the door, he was greeted by a mountain of fast food. Lucas, with a beaming smile, had clearly prepared for another night of indulgence. “Hey, look what I brought home!” Lucas exclaimed, gesturing to the piles of burgers, fries, and milkshakes. “I thought we’d celebrate your day out with a feast.”

Kevin’s stomach growled in response, but he felt a pang of anxiety as he sat down. “Lucas, I went out today. I applied for some jobs. I want to contribute more and maybe start earning my own money.”

Lucas’s expression shifted subtly, his smile faltering. He took a deep breath before speaking, his tone carefully controlled. “Kevin, sweetheart, you don’t need to worry about that. We’re perfectly fine. I make plenty for us both. You taking on a job would only add stress to your life. You don’t need that. I want you to be happy and relaxed, not worried about working.”

“But I feel like I should be doing something,” Kevin insisted, though his voice wavered. “I don’t want to just depend on you.”

Lucas’s voice grew softer but firmer. “Look, I understand how you feel. But remember, I earn more than enough for us to live comfortably. You taking on a job would only add stress to your life. You don’t need that. I want you to be happy and well taken care of. So just focus on enjoying yourself, and let me handle everything else.”

Kevin hesitated, his thoughts a jumble of conflicting emotions. He looked at the feast Lucas had prepared, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt. “I guess… you’re right. I don’t want to add any more stress. I just want to be good for us.”

Lucas’s expression softened, and he wrapped his arms around Kevin. “That’s all I want too. To make sure you’re happy and well taken care of. So just focus on enjoying yourself, and let me handle everything else.”

Kevin nodded, feeling a wave of relief but still haunted by a lingering sense of unease. “Okay, Lucas. I’ll try not to worry about it.”

As time passed, Kevin’s weight continued to increase, a testament to his sedentary lifestyle and indulgent eating habits. The once-familiar feeling of his jeans being snug had become an everyday reality. He hadn’t weighed himself in months, but curiosity got the better of him one morning. He stepped onto the scale, watching as the numbers slowly climbed to 224 lbs. The figure was a stark contrast to his previous weight of 180 lbs, and the change was undeniable.

Kevin stared at his reflection, his once-trim physique now softened by layers of new flesh. His belly, now a prominent roundness, pressed against his shirt, and he felt a mix of shock and resignation. He took a deep breath, trying to accept the reality of his situation.

Lucas, ever the supportive partner, continued to lavish Kevin with affection and indulgence, reinforcing the comfort and contentment that had become their daily norm. Despite Kevin’s growing concerns, the reassurance and encouragement from Lucas made it difficult for him to challenge the new status quo. The comfort of being cared for and the continual flow of indulgence created a cocoon that was hard to escape from, even if it came with its own set of complexities and compromises.

One evening, as Kevin was deeply engrossed in a game of Call of Duty, Lucas sauntered into the living room carrying a tray laden with burgers, fries, and a large milkshake. He plopped down next to Kevin on the couch, setting the tray on the coffee table.

“Hey, I thought you might need some fuel for this intense gaming session,” Lucas said with a grin. He picked up a burger and held it out to Kevin. “Here, let me help you with this.”

Kevin took a bite of the burger, savoring the rich flavors as he continued to focus on the game. Lucas, watching with amusement, fed him another burger, his hand steady as he maneuvered the food towards Kevin’s mouth.

As Kevin chewed, he let out a hearty belch, the sound escaping before he could stifle it. His face flushed with embarrassment, and he glanced nervously at Lucas. “Sorry about that,” he mumbled, feeling mortified.

Lucas chuckled, his eyes twinkling with affection. “Ata boy! Making room for more?” He playfully patted Kevin’s belly and handed him another burger. “You keep enjoying yourself. You’re doing great.”

Kevin, slightly reassured by Lucas’s easygoing response, took the burger with a shy smile and continued eating. Despite the embarrassment, Lucas’s encouragement made it clear that he was more than content with how things were, even if Kevin’s concerns continued to linger in the back of his mind.
