In Final Fantasy XIV, it is unknown what happens to "Azem" the character whom looks just like your character, and from whom your soul has been essentially built from. So this is my hypothesis lol.

In this comic, Hermes mistakes the actual original Azem with your character. Since the beings who lived at the time were god-like, they didn't suffer through traditional death. If they were struck with a deadly blow, they could respawn as if nothing happened. Hermes hates the idea of actual death and wishes for all living things to live immortally. But the convocation decides to allow death, thus leading souls to join the Lifestream, where their lifeforce (Aether) is recycled and reborn into a new living being. Unless the Aether was stolen...
