Quest Failed - Q&A - Answers!
Added 2017-09-24 17:18:44 +0000 UTCHi there!
I'm happy to say that I've now compiled all of the answers together for the burning questions you guys may have had for the super talented voice actresses working on Quest Failed! And as you can see by how long this post is, they were all more than happy to take part in this!
But enough rambling from me for once--let's let the VAs take the reins~

#1. "How did you become a voice actress?" (Addressed to all) -Anonymous
I started voice acting in YouTube videos. I used my own videos as practice, then got "better" and started acting for others. I'm still relatively "indie" when it comes to voice acting, so I find projects online and email auditions or people scout me to voice a character.
If you're interested in voice acting, too, remember that it is first and foremost ACTING! It's not just making silly voices behind a microphone. You need to know how to make original characters come to life with your voice.
#2. "I know Jilly can be jealous when other monster girls try to take the attention from her, do you get somewhat jealous to the other VAs?" -FelixTheCat
I don't get jealous :) I like that the other ladies get their own chance at voicing their own characters. Everyone has their own strengths and I'm glad to share the work. (Jilly is best girl, tho)
#3. "Given that Quest Failed is still a work in progress and audio content is constantly added in, do you have much trouble keeping your character's voice consistant?" (Addressed to all) -bluh
Before a recording session, I listen back to my old files and it's pretty easy to catch on to the voice that I used before. It's also easy that her voice isn't physically taxing.
#4. "Is adult voice acting only a means to an end or do you enjoy the job? If so, what do you enjoy about it?" (Addressed to all) -Jasmine
Most adult voice acting is a means to an end, but I genuinely enjoy Quest Failed. It probably has to do with Jilly's character. She's fun to voice! She's so cute and she knows what she wants. Her heart is in the right place, even if others suffer for her desires. Also, the game doesn't try to hide what it is. It gets to the fun stuff fairly quickly.
#5. "Do you personally like monster girls? And if so do you have a favorite kind?" -Anonymous
I hadn't thought about it before voicing Jilly. I'd have to say...Jilly is my favorite kinda monster girl. Is that showing favoritism? Whatever. I voice her. Look at her big purple eyes! Her sweet smile! Her cute voice ;) Even outside the erotic nature of Quest Failed, she's the kind of monster girl I'd like to befriend, because she's genuinely interested in humans and wants to befriend them (us?) too. Also, her whole body is a trapping device. Huhuhu. What's not to love?
#6. "How awkward is it to record your lines? Also keep up the great work!" -DrangC0Bex
THANKS!! <3 I have to wait until there's nobody in the house to record. I imagine it'll be super uncomfortable for myself and anyone listening in. Otherwise, in the right recording situation, it's not awkward at all. I get in the zone, and the lines come out.
#7. "What was your favourite scene to do? ie. Which did you have the most fun with or which was the most interesting?" -Ghost047
It was in the first episode and Jilly is with Matty in the tent. Her tongue comes out all monstrously twisted. Something about the slurping was really fun to do. I looked at the screenshots and wondered, "What kind of sound would this make?" This probably sounds weird, but I really like the slurpring I produced. Lololol.
#8. "Is there any particular type of character or personality you enjoy voicing apart from Jilly's and that you hope to be able to voice in the future?" -Anonymous
I mentioned before, I really like Jilly. SHE'S SO CUTE. I love her energy! So when it comes to voicing other characters, I love high-energy characters. I love being able to bounce behind the microphone and really get worked up and shout and scream and growl. Because of this, on the flip side, I don't really like voicing characters who are basically zombies. Most of the time, the characters just aren't right for me or they aren't written well enough for me to enjoy them. I need an array of emotions and motivations to grasp onto.
Any final thoughts/closing notes you may have had regarding the project and your experience working on it, along with anything you may want to say to the fans of the game?
Recording for this game has been a lot of fun. I think it also helps that the game is episodic and I can see the continuous support from the fans, so thank you! <3 And thank you for making Jilly the most popular character of Quest Failed ;) *wink wink* *cough cough cough*

#1. "How did you become a voice actress?" (Addressed to all) -Anonymous
I've loved performing my whole life, so when I was in middle school and high school I danced ballet and sang in choir and acted in all the school plays. Then I went to college and studied theatre, so I got a lot of experience as an actor. I took classes on not only acting technique but also specifically voice and diction. It really helped me get a handle on my voice and how to use it. After college, I started hitting the pavement and looking for acting jobs. Most of the voiceover work I found was online (I think Frost and I found each other on a forum for visual novel development). So I guess becoming a voice actress was a long time in the making!
#2. "I guess I kinda always wanted to ask, What made/inspired you to go into VA? Sorry if it's personal." -Brock
Not too personal at all! :) I've done lots of different kinds of acting... live theatre, improv, on-camera, etc... but I think VA is my favorite! It's probably because I was inspired by video games and anime as a kid. My favorite thing about it is that, in VA, you're not limited to only playing characters that you physically look like. It's the only medium where I get a lot of chances to play animals or little boys or old ladies... or monsters!
#3 "is it hard or annoying to keep your voice so relaxed/tired-sounding in all the dialogue? did you have the impulse to be more expressive and "over-acted" during the whole thing?" -Miss Fortune
Good question! I remember when I was auditioning for Quest Failed, I read for a few different characters. Frost seemed to think that I could play Tari, but that I wasn't really getting the energy level low enough, so we worked through a lot of takes to get the voice right. The "moaning loops" you hear in the game under the dialogue were the trickiest, because they were supposed to grow in intensity every time, but in Tari's case, the ceiling for that was pretty low. It was an interesting challenge to show Tari's excitement up to climax without letting the energy rise beyond the "Tari zone".
#4. "Tari is such a sleepy person~ Do you relate to that or any thing about her?" -FelixTheCat
I do love my sleep! I wish I could fall asleep as easily as her. I think the thing about her that's most similar to me is her nurturing spirit. I love to take care of people! Ask my boyfriend, who gets back rubs all the time whether he asks for them or not. ;-P
#5. "Given that Quest Failed is still a work in progress and audio content is constantly added in, do you have much trouble keeping your character's voice consistant?" (Addressed to all) -bluh
Another good question! I think Tari's voice has changed a little since the beginning. It's got a little more of a husk to it now. I guess it was just something I needed to grow into as the character and story developed. It doesn't bug me though, because it's sort of like Tari gets a little more comfortable with Matt each time, and the player gets a little more comfortable with her, so the voice becomes a little more settled and relaxed in later scenes.
#6. "Is adult voice acting only a means to an end or do you enjoy the job? If so, what do you enjoy about it?" (Addressed to all) -Jasmine
I actually LOVE doing voiceover for adult material! I'd love to do more if I get the chance. It makes me really happy that the stigma is sort of starting to lift from partaking in adult entertainment. What I like about acting in it is that it makes me feel like, in a way, I'm helping to "normalize" mature content a little more. For example, Quest Failed is a fun title with interesting characters and beautiful visuals - it's so much more than just... you know... "fap material." And the same can be said for lots of hentai/ecchi - you miss out if you write it off as "just another porn game". Besides, everybody has desires! It's silly that it has to be a shameful thing for so many people. Side note: it's super fun to tell people I've done stuff like this. My friends like to tease me about it. xD
#7 "do you have a favorite scene you've voiced for tari and is there any kind of scene you would like to do in the future?" -Anonymous
That's a tough one! It's hard to remember the order of the scenes in Chapter 1, but I believe it's the second one... The one where Matt takes her from behind but doesn't actually go inside, just sort of moves himself around between her legs. It's such a sweet, intimate moment, and the expressions on Tari's face are so gorgeous. As for the future, hmm... I know it's not really his nature (or the genre of this game), but it might be nice to see Matt take charge a little more one day! Maybe he'll work up the courage once he and Tari have known each other a little longer... ;-P Ooh! Or maybe a scene where Tari just pleasures herself without knowing Matt is watching her... I wonder what she's like when she's totally alone and unobserved? Now you've got me thinking!
#8 "Hello there Ms. LeMay! This is a pretty generic question, I know, but I'm curious. How'd you land this role as Tari? Thanks in advance!" -Anonymous
Sort of answered this already, but in short, Frost reached out to me to audition after I'd posted on some message boards. :) I auditioned for a few characters in Chapter 1! Tari was my favorite, but I really didn't think I'd get her. I almost didn't send the audition in because I didn't feel like I'd really nailed it. I'm glad Frost was willing to hear me a few times trying it different ways.
#9 "Which other games did you do voice-acting for?" -Kyle
I don't always act under the name "Venus LeMay"... so I've done voices for a few other games, but that's my little secret. ;) There is one other game coming out soon that you'll see my name on though! I won't spoil the surprise, but I will say that if you like our sleepy friend Nefertari, you'll be right at home with this character too. ;)
Any final thoughts/closing notes you may have had regarding the project and your experience working on it, along with anything you may want to say to the fans of the game?
I just want to thank the fan community again for the huge outpouring of support that you guys have kept coming since before the game even came out! I had no idea Quest Failed was going to blow up like it has, and I think this is only the beginning! Please keep supporting the game with Chapter 2, and know that we appreciate every bit of love and send it back to you double! <3

#1. "How did you become a voice actress?" (Addressed to all) -Anonymous
I first got really into anime and the music from anime. This led me to do covers (in Japanese and English) on Youtube, which eventually led me to be interested in the acting side of things as well! I trained on my own for years and when I graduated high school I spend my grad money on equipment and classes and booked my first professional job~ Since then I've continued to work and study VO and I now voice act full time in a major city~
#2. "What was it like when you were asked to voice act for an H-game, and how did you come to voice two characters?" -Jalen
I don't think I was ever closed off to the idea of working on 18+ projects, but considering I hadn't done too many, it was definitely an odd feeling at first. I auditioned for all of the characters in the first chapter, and I was asked to voice both Ruby and hooded girl. I was thrilled to accept!
#3. "I am curious to know how you voice the Hooded girl and Ruby so well, how do you do it? For the longest time, I always thought it was Frost that voiced the Hooded girl, until they told me otherwise lol." -FelixTheCat
Hooded girl and Ruby are both very different characters so for me, it's not too hard to make them sound completely different just by channeling their personalities~ Ruby is very loud and aggressive so she has a very chesty and rough voice. She also has a cute side though and tends to squeak when she's embarrassed which is super cute. <3 Hooded girl is more reserved and has a lot less emotion so I can place her voice higher and lighter without actually changing the pitch much.
#4. "Has vocal training of any kind (whether it be through stage acting, choirs, previous visual novels, etc) helped prepare you for voicing two completely different characters in the same universe? How much of it would you say helped you prepare for this project in particular?" -Tzumamy
Yes! My mom was a professional singer and I did choir from elementary-high school. I also took a lot of VO classes and vocal lessons to help with vocal control and placement. It all helps me immensely in all of the work I do. Totally worth it!
#5. "Given that Quest Failed is still a work in progress and audio content is constantly added in, do you have much trouble keeping your character's voice consistant?" (Addressed to all) -bluh
I always keep a couple clips of each character so I can listen and get into voice/character before I start recording the new stuff. I also check throughout recording just to make sure everything is consistent. Usually once I slip into character I stay in voice pretty easily though~ It's easier now too, since I've gotten to know these characters so well.
#6. "How did you get into being a voice actress for Quest failed anyways?" -rst64tlc
A director/voice actor friend of mine recommended me to audition.
#7. "The most important question of all, are you a cat person or a dog person? Do you think either of the characters you voiced would share your opinion?" -RZ
I am both! I have 2 cats and a dog. I think that Ruby would be a dog person since dogs are loyal and easy to control. I think hooded girl would be a cat person since cats are quiet and keep to themselves~
#8. "Is adult voice acting only a means to an end or do you enjoy the job? If so, what do you enjoy about it?" (Addressed to all) -Jasmine
I definitely enjoy the job! Getting to do intense voice acting like this (especially in Ruby's case) is amazing stress relief!
#9. "Have you ever thought you would be doing voices for characters in an H-Game? And on a scale from 1 to 10, how much do you enjoy this line of work? Are you having fun working for this project?" -Trixie
I never really sat down and though to myself, "Hey, I should voice smut!" But I was never closed off to the idea either~ I actually do enjoy it and have a lot of fun working on this project! It helps that the characters are so dynamic and lovable as well.
#10. "Your voice acting is wonderful. What originally got you interested in voice acting?" -pizzacatmx
Thank you so much! <3 I originally got into voice acting through anime, music and Youtube. When I saw people posting clips and fandubs I thought "I could do that too!" Now here I am 10 years later doing it for a living~
#11. "Between ruby and the hood girl do you enjoy voicing either one more than the other?"
I enjoy voicing both of them equally. Ruby is loud and it feels great to get the aggression out, and hooded girl is quiet but has a lot of emotional undertones and her lack of social skills always makes me giggle!
#12. "How is it voicing a monster girl? Is it strange and new for you or were you personally already into the monster girl genre and femdom? (Love ya Ruby <3)" -Eva Corwin
I was aware of it, but didn't know as much about it when I started! I love voicing strong monster girls! <3
Any final thoughts/closing notes you may have had regarding the project and your experience working on it, along with anything you may want to say to the fans of the game?
Thank you so much for supporting the game and being so active in the community. Getting feedback and seeing that people are enjoying it makes me super happy~

#1. "How did you become a voice actress?" (Addressed to all) -Anonymous
It's something I wanted to do since I was a little girl since I grew up a huge fan of cartoons, animation and video games. As I got older, I was able to find online resources that allowed me to practice and everything snowballed from there.
#2. "What is your thoughts of Lucille? Do you think you can relate to her in any way?" -FelixTheCat
I absolutely love Lucille! Lamia's are actually one of my favorite monster-girl types. As for similarities; we're both dominant women!
#3. "Is it a lot of fun to do Lucille's sultry voice? And are there other kinds of voices you enjoy to do as well?" -Anonymous
Lucille is always a blast to voice, since I get to use my lower range for her character. I basically love doing any sort of voice, though it's nice to use my high range too!
#4. "Given that Quest Failed is still a work in progress and audio content is constantly added in, do you have much trouble keeping your character's voice consistant?" (Addressed to all) -bluh
Thankfully Lucille is a very specific voice type, so I don't have much trouble remembering what she sounds like. I usually have a trigger line I use to slip into the voice, but worse comes to worse I can always play a previous recording for her!
#5. "Is adult voice acting only a means to an end or do you enjoy the job? If so, what do you enjoy about it?" (Addressed to all) -Jasmine
I'm actually a huge fan of hentai games and hentai in general myself, so it's always fun to perform. To me, it's another medium of storytelling and usually allows others to live out fantasies that may not be plausible in reality. I think that's something very special about it. Plus, I feel adult content is too stigmatized.
#6. "Other then Lucille, who is clearly the best, what other character do you think would be fun to voice?" -xkcd12
You have good taste! Lucille is the best. Aside from her, I think it would be fun to voice Ruby - but don't tell that damn dragon I said that. Keep it between you and me.
#7. "What would you do in Matts shoes if you were stuck in the same situation as him?" -Anonymous
I'd probably just give into my fate - I mean, who wouldn't?
#8. "Do you have a favorite scene with Lucille and is there anything you're hoping she might do with poor matty in the future?" -rex
I'm still really fond of Lucille's introduction scene, if I had to pick a favorite. I always loved the whole predator / prey setup. For future scenes, maybe some more magic hijinks!?
Any final thoughts/closing notes you may have had regarding the project and your experience working on it, along with anything you may want to say to the fans of the game?
It's a pleasure voicing Lucille and I hope you enjoy the project as much as I do! Thank you so much for your support!

Whew--and that about does it for the Q&A! I hope it was an enjoyable, informative read and that maybe it was interesting to hear from some of the other people that put so much work into the game other than myself for once.
I'd also like to add that all of the VAs that took part in this had a blast with answering your questions and loved the chance to be able to interact with you all! So thanks again for sending in your questions, and I hope maybe we can do something like this again in the future, if it interests you all!
Thanks~

I will pray to this happen in future.

2018-01-15 01:42:04 +0000 UTCWhile not an impossibility in the future as I believe Ren'Py has full Android/iOS porting capabilities, I'm not very well versed in mobile development stuff and would wonder if certain elements would have to be tweaked for it to be more comfortable to play on a touchscreen, etc. But if there was a large enough demand and interest in such a version it could definitely be something I could devote resources to!

2017-09-24 21:08:55 +0000 UTCI've always admired voice actors for their ability to bring a character to life. Especially characters that defy reality, and pique the imagination. I wish I had the confidence to do what you guys do. :) This was an interesting idea, I just wish I had been able to figure out what to ask. :P
