Quest Failed: Chapter Two - Dev Log #23

Hiya there!

It's been quite a few days since the last update--and for that, I really do apologise. I've been neck deep in the scripting and writing side of things as I work to get a playable build out for the alpha--of which I greatly underestimated the work left before it was at a state I'm happy with. But I'm beginning to wrap up this heavily story focused scene and then after some voice clip editing and implementing I think I should have something ready. I thank you all for your patience!

Today I wanted to present something that I know might be slightly polarising depending on how attached you may have been to the original design/art for her after having it around for so long, but I'm currently putting some resources into remaking Ren's (and soon Cynthia's) sprites.

The reason I'm remaking these two particular sprites is two-fold:

- The artist that originally made both Ren and Cynthia's sprites is no longer on the project as they wished to pursue other endeavors. This left me with a severely limited set of sprites with minimal expressions and lacking in pose variety with no way of adding more, in that particular style.

I did originally attempt to rectify this by having another artist create new faces for the existing sprites, but this resulted in creating a bizarre frankenstein-like mish-mash of elements that didn't quite fit together on one piece, and I felt things were getting worse the more I tried to layer on top of them in a cheap way of trying to side-step the problem.

- Truthfully, there were certain aspects I wasn't fully happy with when taking Ren's and Cynthia's sprites into consideration. Mostly down to the facial elements where things were a touch off, like eyebrows changing style/width between expressions, the eyes seeming a little off, etc. which was the result of the original artist trying their best to mimic the style of the original five sprites from Chapter One. And I do think they did a good job, and am grateful for the concept designs they gave me.

So, taking these two things into consideration, I made the risky choice of having the sprites remade. The result of Ren's sprite you can see in the attached image of this post, which I think captures her cheeky, energetic spirit perfectly and gives me a wealth of expressions to work with now over the limited palette I had before.

Of course, I wanted to be forthright with this change, so it wasn't too big of a surprise down the line. As I understand the style is a bit different, but I felt that this was the best route to take for the sake of not feeling limited with her sprite movements/expressions further into the story as already with 2 (soon to be 3!) alpha builds I felt I was stretching the few expressions I had for her original sprite.

Ultimately I know that the mix of styles steadily building up for Quest Failed is due to collapse in on itself and I think a choice is going to have to be made down the road--whether I try to unify everything under one style, or keep pushing with the mix for faster development progress.

I hope you all like the new sprite for her, and like always, I'm always listening to comments/critique and will always strive to take things into consideration where realistically possible.

Thank you~

Comments

I too much prefer this new Ren and look forward to new Cynthia as well!!

Ghost

Ahh, I'm so glad you think so~ I've had some ideas drafted up for different characters for audio scenes but have been devoting all my time to getting alpha 0.3 at the moment, but hope to have some time freed up down the line!

Frostworks

Gorgeous, absolutely amazing. Question! Any word on a new Audio scene in the near future~? ^_^

Neko Alchemy

loving the new art style!

Darckin Ryu

On a personal note I like the art style a lot, I have to agree that I think they captured her cheekiness more. keep up the good work, i'm cheering for you and everyone else working on the project. ///_^Y

Shanbae

I highly prefer the new design, she looks much cuter imo.

White-Knuckles

Some CGs are gonna have different styles between some characters, which was an unfortunate limitation of the way I scheduled and planned things, but I'm hoping once people see how it's all implemented that it's all good. It'll be my biggest worry for sure

Frostworks

Looks good to me. I definitely do appreciate the difficulty of having to distribute workload while trying to maintain style consistency, but this is really nice...

Porcupine

So long as the art looks nice, I don't think I'd be too bothered if the art styles don't match up. MGQ had a lot of the one-off girls in different styles, and it worked fine. Now, I'm not sure how many one-off girls QF is planning on having, but I think even if some of the main heroines are a bit different it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just don't mix art styles for the same character and I think you're good.

TRlegacy

This is one of those things that developers have to contend with. I think the new sprite looks gorgeous, and I think that you are putting the good of the project ahead of expediency. I for one do not mind a delay as long as the end result looks good. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the completed work.

Michael Vaccaro

I wouldn't worry too much on having a mix of styles, in my opinion. Quest Failed doesn't seem to have a restricted art palette that can make things stick out like a sore thumb and the sprites for the chapter 1 don't have anything wrong with them to be in need of replacing.

Mr Blah

Ah, no, I can only wish I had the talent to draw such art, haha. Sadly my own talents just extend to the writing/managing/scripting/production side of things. But I'm super glad you guys like the new sprite and I have confidence Cynthia's new sprite will come out great as well~

Frostworks

Both Ren and Cynthia looked "Derpy"~ I am glad you got a new artist~

FelixTheCat

I can't judge the new melons until I see them in action.

Trixie

Seconding the aboves. This style meshes a lot better with Chapter 1's, and that aside, I think it's way better than Ren's original. I hope this artist is a keeper; I wouldn't mind seeing future sprites in that style (or did you remake them yourself? Not sure on second reading...). Can't wait to see the work done on Cynthia :)

Thinkcork

Think I like this version better

Mark V

Well, if the picture above is any indication of the new artist's work then I don't mind. I believe as long as the sprites are good and as erotic as chapter 1 then they will work for me.

Keltoren

I'm still in love with the art style of Chapter 1 and I really like the new sprite compared to the old one.
