After that whole bullying incident, Irina started to hang out with him and Issei more often. Though after two years of being best friends with both Issei and Ryuji, she sadly had to leave for England due to her parents being relocated in their work.
Issei was balling his eyes out the whole day while Ryuji only felt peeved at the loss of his friend, knowing that they'll meet again later down in life.
He did get something in return though, as his usual dreamless nights differed from the norm.
"This is new."
Ryuji muttered as he got up from the soft ground filled with leaves, his eyes scanning around the lush forest that he appeared in. The trees were large and tall, the size of skyscrapers from what he was witnessing, with sunlight barely seeping through the gaps.
He thought of just sitting and enjoying the nice cold breeze that the forest had to offer when he felt a jolt. Looking at the general direction where it came from, he noticed that there was a beam of sunlight that looked like an illuminating path towards something.
Against his better judgement, he started walking in the general direction, following the sunlight-filled path, with each jolt of energy seemingly energizing him further. Eventually, he entered a clearing of the forest; the sudden burst of light caused him to cover his eyes.
Gusts of wind blew as he moved his arm from his face to reveal an abandoned temple with a rusted sword stabbed into the center of a podium.
His heart raced as he noticed that the sword in the middle of the ruins had the same hilt as his Sacred Gear. Interest overcame his suspicions as he walked towards the blade, inspecting it closely.
It was identical to the bladeless sword that he had, with the exception of, well, having a curved blade, though rusted and old. Actually, now he knows that his Sacred Gear was actually a short sword, being shorter in height than his current 6-year-old self.
Wait a second... His eyes noticed the engraving on the hilt. It wasn't faded like on his Sacred Gear, so he used his finger to wipe away the moss that covered the marking.
"... OH."
A dragon eating its own tail. That was what the engraving was.
It... What? This symbol, isn't this —
"Huh. I'm actually surprised; someone got this Sacred Gear."
Ryuji snapped his head to where the voice came from.
A blonde child stood behind him with messy hair, emerald eyes staring back at him with amusement, sporting a long-sleeved high-collared white tunic over an undershirt, a pair of gloves, knee-length black pants, and black boots.
"Yo."
This can't be. He recognized this person.
"M-Meliodas?!"
Ryuji exclaimed, shocked as the person in front of him chuckled at his expression.
From the series Nanatsu No Taisai, or The Seven Deadly Sins in the English localization, this guy was the main character of that series, but how? This was the DXD world, isn't it? He was so confused.
"I'm not Meliodas, though the resemblance is quite uncanny when comparing it to my real appearance."
Waving his hand, two soft-looking chairs suddenly appeared out of thin air, one behind him and the other behind Ryuji. Hopping, the Meliodas-looking fellow sat down and got comfortable in his seat, gesturing Ryuji to do the same.
"Right, introductions. I'm Yahweh."
Ryuji blanked out before lying on his chair, his hand palming his face.
"Sorry, could you say that again?"
"Yahweh. The person who made the biblical faction? Made a majority of the world to exist? That's me, though I am only one small part of the actual guy."
Yahweh said nonchalantly while he manifested a drink to appear in his hand. Taking a sip and enjoying it, he looked over at Ryuji, raising his glass of water.
"Want one?"
"Yes, please."
Ryuji said with a sigh as his own drink appeared in thin air. Gulping down the glass, he sets it on the ground as Yahweh continued.
"I'm a his sin that he placed into the Sacred Gear System in Heaven before sacrificing himself to seal the Apocalyptic Beast, Trihexa (666), so I am Yahweh, though only a small fraction."
"His sin?"
He nods as Ryuji gets the main point he was trying to convey.
"That's right. I'm Yahweh's sin of anger and hatred. His Sin of Wrath."
"God had a sin? I thought he was more... what's the word, pure?"
"More like he suppresses it to the point that he forgot what it was like to have a sin. But when the Great War started, all his seven sins revealed themselves. Especially his Wrath. His kids were killing each other for a useless war, after all, that would make even God angry."
Finishing his glass of water, he jumped down from his seat and walked to the sword stabbed on the ground while gesturing him to follow along. Ryuji did so, and they both relocated to the sword in the middle of the ruins.
"I scoured through your memories; there was some kind of lock on them, but I managed to crack a tiny part to have a peek at my new user."
"Wait, you broke the seal?!"
"A small crack, but that seal sure is tough! It took nearly 600 years worth of stored magical energy to break through, only for it to regenerate back in a jiffy! That was some good entertainment though!"
Wrath sighed with a grin on his face and tugged on his tunic.
"Searching through the memories that I could get my hands on before the seal reformed, I found this guy and decided, "Why not?" since I died in the war. Imagine someone entering this mindscape and finding old Yahweh chilling inside; the whole world would be chasing after you to extract me out, one way or another."
"That is worrying."
Ryuji muttered, sweat dropping from his face. Wrath simply waved his hand.
"Psh, they'd know better to do that; my children aren't that bad... sort of."
Reaching the blade, Wrath rolled his shoulder before whispering to himself.
"Well, well, well... Time to get back to business."
His hand gripped on the handle as he tugged, the blade easily sliding out of the stone. Lifting it up sky high, the rust and wear on the blade slowly dissipates into the air, revealing a beautiful sheen of metal.
With ease, he flipped the sword and held its blade with the handle facing towards Ryuji.
"Here, it's all yours."
Reaching out, Ryuji grabbed the sword's handle. A wave of energy bursts from the sword, gusts forming due to the energies exerting from it, as Wrath explained.
"The Sacred Gear's name is Cross Counter, Reflection of God's Wrath. It allows the user to reflect magical attacks aimed at them back at their enemy but with more than double the power. The stronger the opponent's attack is, the stronger the user's attack becomes."
Ryuji whistled as he admired the blade when it suddenly disappeared from his hand. Looking confused, Wrath looked up in the sky before tilting his head back to face Ryuji.
"You're about to wake up soon. I'll see you later tonight, we'll start on your training then."
"Hold up, training?"
Before he could get an answer, the world turned white as Ryuji woke up on his bed.
