NaNoWriMo/Writaton 2024 (relates to Irwin's)
Added 2024-10-24 13:16:40 +0000 UTCEDIT1: SO, I'll just update this message to get more info to you guys instead of posting more.
So far, the reactions are roughly split between something with Scifi and a story to expand the backstory of Irwin's. Although I eventually want to write some of those backstories, for this Writathon, I will focus on something unrelated to Irwin's.
So, that means that so far, there are a couple of things that match up.
Scifi
Space pirates
Space station base building
Nanites and some technologically based world-ending disaster
I'll be keeping an eye on the comments here till next Monday and update the list. After that I'll think about what to do, and post a short synopsis later. I'll try and set up a story where it's either previously noticeable and won't last too long or one that I know I can cut off at a neet logical point.
-- Original message --
As those who have been here since last year will know, I usually participate in the NaNoWriMo and its RoyalRoad counterpart the Writaton challenge. For those who don't know it, its a challenge to write 55.555 words in a month.
Due to how busy I am with trying to get Irwin's book 2 out, with editing, covers and all the other stuff, I'd somewhat offhandedly decided not to participate. The thing is, as 1 November closes in, I find myself second guessing that decision. Usually I write a new story on NaNo- a shorter one, that I don't plan to continue, but last year I doubled down on Irwin's. It did leave me with an itch to write something new that I haven't scratched for over two years now.
So... I have decided I will be joining NaNo, but not as I have in the past. Usually I did my best to double or triple the word count to challenge myself- not this year. First off, I want to continue writing Irwin's, and I can't do that and write a 100K plus story in a month. However, I will probably drop to 2 chapters per weekend.
Now, the good news: I have a ton of ideas to write, but I'm curious to see what you would like to see me write. What kind of story do you think my writing style would fit with? I've done pure LitRPG's, Gamelit, fantasy, and horror. Perhaps I should try a slice of life, or scifi? Perhaps something with vampires, or cultivation? Put a response here, and if it triggers my interest I'll write that.
----
PS: If the flow is good, I might still write 3 chapters Irwin's as I usually only write fr/sa/su due to work. For November I have more free time so with just 55k its likely I'll be fine with doing it in the in-between gaps. New stories are very easy to write at the start, only after the world expands does it get harder.
PS2: I've heard about some issues with NaNoWriMo and AI writing... I'm not going to go into that as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Edit: quick addition. I don't use AI to write. I sometimes use it to edit some stuff, or check for mistakes. The only thing I have used it for are some of the little 'songs' that are sometimes in Irwin's. I suck at writing those. That said, usually it still means I need to change all of it to get it normal.

I see what you mean, though I can understand the reasoning behind it. It's probably meant to show people an interesting bit. That said, I do agree that in case of base-building, it's better to have some progression happen in the downtime instead of just using the downtime as skipping over the parts where nothing happens. Will see how it goes when I start :) Couple a days till the 1e, and I'm not starting until then.

2024-10-28 10:33:58 +0000 UTCI was more commenting that a lot of stories have increased every day then a multi year skip and barely any increases and no new skills then immediately starts getting stuff again after the skip. Makes it feel false.

2024-10-28 10:25:43 +0000 UTCNever read that one, but as I said below, give Blue Star Enterprises a read and let me know what you think. I'd probably go a similar route. And if I can pull it off? No idea, but it would be just a shorter story so even if its not that great there's not much loss :)

2024-10-28 09:47:10 +0000 UTCI did to, I'll keep it in mind. I think to do a base-building right, time skips are probably somewhat essential, though to many might remove the sense of being grounded in the story.

2024-10-28 09:46:05 +0000 UTCI really like the idea of a base building story. However I've only ever read one that I liked and even then the ending made it a near thing. Mercenary Manager by Chad Opo. But if you think you can pull it off, go for it

2024-10-28 09:36:16 +0000 UTCFinished it. Not bad. I like the time skips where the main protagonist actually accomplished things in the skip.

2024-10-26 18:44:43 +0000 UTCI agree with you in so far that I've yet to read any base building story that doesn't get boring really fast. That said, have you tried Blue Star Enterprises? It's a form of base-building, and it's pretty good. I'd say it is base-building lite, with the characters and a survival aspect being the main focus, and the base building pretty cleverly hidden within the story. If I do a base building story, I'll definitely do it more like that.

2024-10-25 06:57:43 +0000 UTCBase building just feels weak writing wise. It's a lot of not story that just becomes more and more about base building as it goes normally. With tons of chapters that don't really progress the story.

2024-10-25 02:18:57 +0000 UTCA suggestion for something similar, that would be tied to Irwin, but without spoilers and some differences would be a story of a Galadin BEFORE they had hand cards. Maybe the explorer(s) who discovers the civilisation that does? Given no card smithing, no spoilers. Some insight into the pre-smithing Galadin empire. Maybe some hints around the Guildar. But the perspective of someone who is more mature/experienced, but has only their own card and has never encountered anyone like this. Not having hand cards, would it be more like cultivation for them? What is the morals of hunting those like themselves who drop cards? This could be a teaser for Irwin's world, a bit of an intro to Irwin's world, a different development path (for the protagonist), and depending on how developed the Galadin empire was before card smithing a little "sci-fi" (the empire was meant to be collossal both before and after the card-smithing, but obviously these stories are 10s of thousands years old so may be wrong).

2024-10-25 01:57:51 +0000 UTCso i just think this is cool: "the first time the world ended it was a disaster nanite swarming everything rewriting dna at random, the second time was the surprise berth of the AI gods and their judgment of life that's why the third time it happened we welcomed are new neighbors to earth for the first time" So a system kaiju world where people can change the shape if they please the gods, like killing a dangerous creature or growing lovely carrots and asking for wings kind of thing. Throw in a collapsing “modern world” and some weird not quite humans that just think it's normal for a town to wake up and ask for hay.

2024-10-24 23:04:17 +0000 UTCAlso u could add some special technology’s to the galadin which nobody else had and that have been lost in the river of time, maybe one day gelwin gives some clues for a possible lost ancient hidden base of the galadin whixh could be written about , which could involve the base building u all guys are all eager to read. Sorry guys i am way to invested in this novel haha i check everyday even though i know there wont be. A chapter :(

2024-10-24 22:33:48 +0000 UTCI dont know if u would like this idea but i really would enjoy more about the backstory of the glorious Galadin and the mysterious gelwin. How about a story at the time gelwin was young in the galadin empire maybe how glorious they have been and some time warps to when the galadins (maybe he is in the council of the upper echelons ) had to flee and separate.

2024-10-24 22:27:51 +0000 UTCYeah, so far it seems the overlapping thing is sci-fi and something with basebuilding. I could do this in a slightly less stressful situation and add some slice of life stuff. Let's see what the others say and I'll come up with a little plan before I start writing next week :)

2024-10-24 19:11:28 +0000 UTCMaybe city building/settlement management in sci-fi. (●'◡'●)

2024-10-24 18:54:36 +0000 UTCmy vote is for some kind of survival crafting rpg. theres lots of lit rpg with adventures, theres lots of cultivation stories, but theres not a lot of city building / litrpg stories. usually it focuses on one aspect or the other. Maybe a story about an apoc system survival... not from the pov of humans, but one of the "invaders" coming to earth. Maybe their planet was being destroyed but the system saved them? Show how a group already used to the system uses the system to start a new empire.

2024-10-24 16:18:49 +0000 UTCI'd say to write something that interests you, but that isn't something you are truly passionate about if the intention is to drop it after the challenge. I think you do slice of life very well in the moments we see in Irwin's story. I wouldn't be opposed to a short story set in the same universe as Irwin just to expand the world more, but I suspect you would like a break from it and want to go in a different direction. Something like space pirates would be cool though to, you already have some piracy effectively in Irwin's Journey, so it would just be looking at it from a different approach and writing about the villain instead of the hero.

2024-10-24 15:40:30 +0000 UTCMaybe a story of Cultivation with pure Space Farm development. I mean the cultivation is literally process of cultivating a land, be it as a farm, a Forrest, or even a mineshaft like underground one. And all the power, growth, spells depend on the history of what is growing and what has been grown, or lived/died in the soul garden.Maybe end goal is to become living self sustaining world or something. Or even mundane self sustaining farms, forest or a biosphere

2024-10-24 15:09:00 +0000 UTCHey, sounds great. No worries if you can‘t do 3 chapters of Irwin per week, we will manage for a month ;) As for suggestions: I actually don‘t have anything overly constructive to say, but I have a bit of a shitlist. The genres I would rather not see in a shortstory (and that is what 55k words basically is) would be LitRPG, Gamelit, Cultivation and Slice of Life as well as horror. That is not to say that I dislike the genres in general (except for horror, blegh), quite the opposite in fact. But I feel like all of them need more time to really get rolling. A system that doesn‘t have any depth is just a waste of words in my opinion, the same is true for cultivation. Slice of life with the usually accompanying slow pace just doesn‘t cover enough time to really get into the characters and developing plot. At the end of the day I will likely give whatever you decide to write a go anyways…

2024-10-24 15:04:55 +0000 UTCI feel like you would write really cool sci-fi? That would be fun to read for sure
