Human infants are basically still fetuses compared to other animals in the animal kingdom. We had to evolve to be born sooner than ideal due to our increased brain size and standing upright to support the larger brain which in turn lead to narrower pelvises. That's why alot of animals can function and walk around pretty well after being born like horses and humans babies are basically useless until after a couple years. Since human infants are still in a fetus stage of development after birth, their bodies are still growing like a fetus would, so if you were to cut off a finger of an infant it would grow back. However since their bodies are nearing the end of their fetus development stage, it would only grow back crooked or not entirely perfect. Its not exactly common knowledge as who the hell cuts off their babies fingers, but it is a thing for when it accidently happens to some. I hope that answers your question.

Trying to be a doting father after she was already being raised by them and Luomen probably wasn't going to cut it. Plus you saw all the letters from Fengxian. He was supposed to be away 6 months and he disappeared for 3 years. Why did he not write to her? Families and feelings are always complicated.

As lots of people said in the comments, it's possible for your fingertip to grow back, especially if you're young, but Maomao also said that her mom had a crooked finger now. I took that to mean that the second little finger was just a piece of one of Fengxian's fingers, and she never actually hurt Maomao at all.

I wouldn't feel much for her either. But Lakan really seems like he would've liked to have been involved in her life, he just wasn't permitted. Plus, wouldn't the brothel grandma tell Maomao every prejudicial thing she could think of, to prevent Maomao wanting anything to do with him? Struck me as unfair

I haven't been enjoying it very much myself but I'm not used to watching an episode per week and I'm aware that I'm probably forgetting a lot between episodes. I will be binging the whole thing for a second viewing when it's finished and I'm hoping it hits me better that way because I loved season 1 but season 2 doesn't even feel like the same show to me right now. I'm pleased to hear someone seems to rate it well, though. I'm looking forward to the binge even more now.

2025-03-28 02:13:41 +0000 UTCThe show didn’t lie and make you think he was a heavy drinker of wine. In fact, in one episode he leaves his drink behind and tells Jinshi to give it to his servants. It was pretty clear that it was not alcoholic I thought. I feel such sympathy for Lakan and such disgust for the old Madame and everyone who was at the Verdigris House and kept the secret. He’s been going there all these years not knowing she was in the adjoining annexe. So near and yet so far. He never lost his love for her and he’s hated himself all this time for events that were out of his control. The big shock is that Maomao was part of it. She regularly goes out of her way to help total strangers and she chose to allow her parents to suffer all this time. I find it difficult to reconcile that knowledge with everything else we know about her character. It’s sheer cruelty.

I don't know if this was a Crunchyroll change in translation, but in the anime Lakan told Jinshi that he wanted to "force himself" on Fengxian. In the light novel he says he wanted to take her to his bed. Very different connotations in English, especially when talking about a courtesan at a brothel. However, I don't think this is too bad. In my opinion, Lakan feels heavy guilt over the loss of Fengxian (he believes her to be dead at that time) and I think he is overly critical of himself. Now, I wasn't as down on Lakan as many people have been (I've seen lots of reactions) for two reasons. 1) I pretty much assume the writers are manipulating us, so I'm always a bit suspicious. 2) Lakan almost immediately stated that he had learned his mistake with Fengxian and wasn't interested in repeating it to acquire Maomao. That implies remorse for his prior actions and that's a good thing.

Lakan was absent (not his fault) and brothel's reputation took a big hit (hence why when we were talking about Pairin being bought, one of the clients was one that "sticked with visiting Brothel through difficult times"). And well - child of such prostitute that tanked the reputation of a brothel wouldn't be liked very much probably. At least initially. I'm not going to speculate about Mao Mao's behavior and emotionlessness - there are some theories, but this is outside of the Anime. If later you're looking to read something I highly suggest Light Novel over Manga. It's also much more ahead in publication.

Granny told Lakan that Maomao's mom was gone when he ran to the brother after finding the 2 fingers in the envelope, so he thinks she has been dead for years. I think granny is Maomao's actual grandmother. The reason that her mom wasn't thrown out after getting sick is because that's granny's daughter. Just a thought. Try some rom coms. I was a 90% shounen person as well, but after watching shows like Kagyua Sama Love is War, and My Dress Up Darling showed me that I was so wrong. Those shows are so much more entertaining. I cut off a decent size piece of my left thumb a few years ago, and I was shocked that it mostly grew back. The words she calls his dad means old man not dad. Crunchyroll likes to change actual dialog to what they think should be said. They do it in every anime they have.

2025-03-27 18:14:03 +0000 UTCThis episode was beautiful. First of all, it’s very subtle, but Meimei loved Lakan, so having the opportunity for him to buy her out was probably a dream come true. Yet she instead revealed to him that Fengxian was still alive, and has been there in the brothel this entire time. I’m not sure if you fully grasped everything or not, but just in case. Lakan assumed that Fengxian was dead and gone, so he did not try to search for her, and instead pursued getting his daughter back. He discovered that Maomao was probably kept there, and kept trying to convince the Madam to buy her out for years, which is why he was there often and Maomao would hide from him. And yes, Maomao does not seem to have any emotional attachment to the people that created her. That’s kind of how she sees them, not as parental figures. Realistically, in that world she grew up in at the time, it’s not hard to get pregnant. Like she said, “I’m only here because he managed to land that shot”. Just because you have a child doesn’t make you a good parent, or act like a parent at all. She was created, essentially, as a means for Lakan to be able to afford Fengxian and buy her out. It seemed Fengxian had similar sentiments about her own mother. My only question at this point is if her adopted dad kept it secret that he’s had her all this time? Maybe him and Lakan don’t talk? That parts curious to me. And not sure if you caught it, but Maomaos dance was essentially a send off dance for her mother, since she was getting bought out. Kind of like a final farewell maybe, a way to let go of this past with her parents and move on from that. That’s how I interpret it. Gorgeous dance as well, I almost cried at that scene. Hahahaah I’m glad you didn’t buy into thinking at was almost a kiss. Ain’t no WAY she acts like that unless it has to do with medicine/poison. Poor Jinshi though 😂 this is the slowest of slow burns, we have a long way to go on Maomaos end probably. I LOVE this series, it’s amazing, and I can’t wait for you to catch up!

This story is not finished yet, there's 14 light novels out so far, so expect great moments between Jinshi and Maomao but this is not a love story first and foremost. As long as you keep that in mind, you will get more patient with the shipping not always going the way you want it to. And yes, little kids can regrow the top of their fingers if they are chopped off. My cousin got her middle finger stuck in a car door when she was a little child and it grew back.

The show shows in a very subtle way that she was in love with him, but knowing that he loved Fengxian she chose to give up being with Lakan so that he could be reunited with Fengxian.

2025-03-27 16:21:44 +0000 UTCThe show really does a masterful job of how with one hand it constantly reiterates through Maomao and her adoptive father to be careful with assumptions and not speak based on conjecture etc, while at the same time with the other creating subtle framing that makes you think Lakan is an absolute villain despite not ever showing him actually do anything bad. On the contrary, most of what he does is actually helpful, giving Jinshi and Maomao hints on things he's noticed and feel is off that ultimately help Maomao save Jinshi's life (as Maomao says his main flaw is he's too lazy to actually do anything himself but rather make someone else do something about whatever his gut tells him is an issue). I think it's like you mentioned, that he thinks of himself as the villain who ruined everything, which coupled with his lack of social skills due to his disability just makes him come off as such, and of course the show framing things in a way that's very easy to make wrong assumptions from (like the drinks he was having etc).

In Japanese there are many words to make reference to family members, the difference is only the formality, affection, and closeness. Like in English saying father and dad. Mean the same and not.
