As for why the ground has so much stuff, I think it's because the "dump" is the actual planet, so they probably have access to some version of a lot of things that aren't just trash. I assume The Sphere is like a utopia that was built at some point and a big chunk of the population went up on it and left everyone else behind.

He calls it his "aibo" which means partner, but the type of stick he uses is called a "bo" staff, so "ai-bo" is like a pun or play on words
