And they're 4 or 5 year veterans by that point. Before they got to the Federation...

Alex Hencher

I know I'm a little late, but the railgun they show here is pretty close to a real weapons platform the Germans created during the world wars. It even looks remarkably similar.

Alex Hencher

I don't think there's any more 86 reactions until Halloween... in case anybody is wondering...

Sparky Reynolds

The scene showing Jerome’s well worn boots and Lena’s shiny and pristine shoes highlights the gulf in their experience and perspective.

Unspoken

Love that moment ngl

Je to

I have no idea how, but on first watch I just couldn’t get into this. Very thankful you started watching this. It’s such a beautiful painful story.

Joshua Gonzales

I honestly think Uncle Jerome hates the citizenry of the Republic more than how he thinks differently of the 86. He brother, Lena's dad, was more of the idealist that went out there even thought he had his flaws. Uncle Jerome is the nihilist who thinks it would be better to be rid of the republic ultimately than let it continue.

jastop94

The photo and letter of 86 were in her breast pocket, that's why she held it there.

Murabito_A

Yes, there are several indications Lena (Len-Uh) died and the Republic fell going back to when Frederica connected to Shin showing Kiri was at the Republic and showing the Republic on fire and the flag bent over, the general telling him to not worry about the Republic, Shins message to her and so on. Also, the guy who did the music for Attack on Titan also does the music for Eighty-Six. There're also a reason people don't call this show Eighty-Six but... EIGHTY-PEAK! This show is easily top 3 in my anime. As always LOVE the reactions and can't wait for the last episodes....

I always feel the same joy seeing you enjoy this anime , but I’ve already said that before :) What really made me happy this time was hearing you compare it to Frieren in terms of writing, direction, and emotional depth. I completely agree with you, even if no one around me who watches anime seems to share that opinion (they don’t see the beauty of Frieren either, x] ). There’s just one small detail I’ve always wondered about in episode 16. In the scene where Lena faces her uncle , at first he seems like he’s going to stop her, but then it feels like he might actually agree with her, or maybe he’s trying to make amends by helping her. At one point, the camera focuses on their feet, showing the general’s worn-out boots. I’ve never really understood the intention behind that shot or what it’s supposed to mean. For me, though, I’ve never seen that scene as him leaving to fight the Legion to buy her time. It’s always felt more like he was going to stop the other soldiers of Magnolia from interfering or getting in Lena’s way. I even wonder if, given his rank, he might be the one who organized the “meeting to explain the situation” we hear announced in the background, like his goal was to hold back everyone in the army who would have opposed Lena. And I have to say, the scene where Lena activates the Para-Raid to connect with all the Eighty Six units is one of my absolute favorites in the entire anime. It still gives me chills every time I watch it. It’s one of those moments I love to revisit from time to time. Her determination, the risks she takes, because I imagine connecting to that many people isn’t exactly safe, like the shared vision she once experimented with alongside Raiden. Raiden would probably have scolded her again if he had known, XD. Thank you again for sharing your reactions with us, it truly means a lot. I’ll be looking forward to the next video, whenever it comes. Watching you discover this story is a real joy in itself.

Argails

Knowing how the para-raid puts a strain on the brain, Lena probably took a huge risk connecting to EVERY 86.

Shucks

The last episode was epic, 86 is really good 🎥

A word of advice, stock up on tissues just like covid-19 for the rest of the anime😅

paozer 87

Best anime ever and every emotion felt. Only 11/10 anime for me.

paozer 87

Getting closer to ep 22, can’t wait.

So Ground vehicles are a real thing. Ground effect occurs when the altitude of flight is less than half of a wingspan.

Jan Negrey

You can see that Division Commander took the task of telling Shin the hard truth, even though he didn't fully agree with it.

Jan Negrey

Yeah this community is a treasure. <3 And myself (and my mods) would never stand for that type of behavior. Ruins it for me and for people here! Sorry that happened to you. I would of absolutely deleted the comment and banned them (a kind reminder to always let my mods know if you see people in old posts even, saying things that can ruin ppls experiences so we can delete those comments) xox

Jessica McCann

"Shin doesn't know" that Lena has feelings for him and he has for her.

Jan Negrey

They now have Para-RAID. And Frederica also has one. She's been trying to talk to Shin.

Jan Negrey

Karstahl hates what Republic has done. He prefers if this country and it's racist inhabitants die. No Karstahl said that military is supposed to do what populace wants. And since populace is racist, he doesn't believe they deserve to live now that it is demonstrably shown that their ideas were wrong and led to downfall of the republic.

Jan Negrey

I think the uncle hates the citizens of the Republic. The Federation's communication system is based on that of the Republic, so it's plausible that frequencies cross, so to speak. And Shin's power isn't ghosts or souls; it's what remains of synthetic copies of the brains used by the Legion.

Mario Hector Aragon

Nordlicht squadron is like 24 people. 5 of "our" and 19 of "foreign volunteers". 5 are great, but the rest of Nordlicht squadron ain't pushovers.

Jan Negrey

If we are doing 19-20 together and then 21-23 together that’s a peak order. Watching 21-23 at the same time is in an experience just a generational trio of episodes to close out a season. With S2 still in limbo I imagine Flexie is getting her light novel order in, S1 covers Vol 1-3 and I guess a very very small part of 4 because of some anime pacing rearranging and I think volume 14-15 just came out in Japan lol

SecondCityKyle

oooohh man, I always found the scene of San Magnolia falling to be very satisfying and my respect for the 86 that kept fighting until the end for a nation that rejects them. Of course I was worried for Lena, but let the nation face the consequencess of their collective actions. They choose this!

Itz A Dolphin

the second op is great, but i really love the song for the second ed. the way it builds up into a frenzy of sound at the end is really affecting

sepiatone

The video starts with Flexie saying to grab a scotch. Who am I to argue with her?Edit: Slowly watching because this show hits me. After finishing episode 16, I read her uncle trying to be... how can I say it, kind of a protective bad guy. He wanted to show our bloody regina all the horribleness of what she was going to face and be that wall standing in her way, so that if she faltered he could protect her and be there for her. And his smile as he walked away was him realizing she was truly ready to face that horribleness from their people and that she wasn't going to break upon it, mainly because especially with his brothers passing he was not able to overcome that. Again, personal opinion and maybe pushing my own experiences onto it Edit 2: I’m going to have to take a break before Episode 18. Episode 17 is probably one of the single best depictions for my experience of survivors guilt and PTSD. It’s not always back into the war zone, sometimes it’s just those you lost. And honestly, the little sister’s response is understandable and I’d love to say I was never on the receiving end of family members grief who don’t understand the situation either due to age or lack of having to be in that situation. And then the politicians and higher ups who view the war as nothing more than the chess pieces being moved through the board without being able to accept the human cost. I’ll need a break before episode 18, 86 is not a bingeable show for me on rewatch either 😂

Andrew S

The policy "SAINT MAGNOLIA FIRST" has as a long-term counterpart the lack of allies in difficult times 😅😅😅

21:06 - did you notice Republic of Saint Magnolia flag in flames there?

When the Nachzehrer bass drops

nordquist7516

These episodes packed a lot! 25:30 That's Rei (Shin's brothers) tag that he still keeps with him. Everyone else's tag he left at the memorial but he hasn't let go of Rei's 25:35 The anime doesn't describe this, but in the novels, there is an execution unit like Spearhead for each battlefront (East, West, South, North). Spearhead is the eastern one, Sledgehammer is the northern one. So the guy talking here has the same position at Sledgehammer that Shin had at Spearhead. 27:18 I love the dynamic between the 3 prominent Alba we see. Annette the pragmatist (there's nothing I can do), Jerome the nihilist (we'd be better of dead), and Lena the idealist (even so...) From the Novel: "If all that awaited the citizens was a massacre, we would be lucky. But you've studied history, Lena. You know the consequences won't be anything so lenient. Especially for a young woman like you." Lena flinched for a moment, imagining the vivid implications of what he meant. It was something she considered, of course. Having taken command of a combat squadron, she may have earned the trust of her troops to at least some degree. But from their perspective, she was a white pig first, hidden snugly away from harm. So once they were allowed within the walls, the Eighty-Six may just kill them - it was a possibility she was well aware of. And of course, there was the possibility that violence would not be limited to murder. Still... Her hand touched the breast pocket of her blouse, where she kept a letter and photograph stored preciously in a waterproof cover. She cherished them at all times, even as the legion drew closer by the day. Because they were the final words and sentiments they had left her. "Even so... I don't wish to sit idly by and wait for death. Even if I die, beaten and powerless, I will fight until the end." Just as they lived and died. Shin and the others believed she could live that way, too, and she didn't want to put that faith to shame. Throughout this core Lena is often reaching for that photo and letter that Spearhead left her. 31:54 In the last core Jerome says he is doing what he thinks the will of the citizens is not what is best for them. Now the nihilist believes their will is to die to the legion rather than get massacred by the 86 they demeaned. Yet in the end, he puts his faith in Lena, as much as he can. 34:20 Now we see what Lena has been asking Annette to work on earlier in the core. A way to use the para-raid to contact all processors, despite the risks. This scene is where Volume 2 ended btw! 49:49 That's why I hope this show gets more seasons! The world building is really cool. 1:06:07 Agreed. I love that scene. 1:09:55 Yes, he believes Lena is dead. She was the first one he was able to say, "we're going on ahead" to. Everyone he has known, all 300+ comrades he carried, has left him behind. He found salvation in leaving those words behind to someone who said they wouldn't forget and now she's gone... My interpretation is not that he's happy. I think it's relief. The same emotion as when he got his suicide mission orders last time with Spearhead when he told Lena, "we're not going to die. We're finally going to be free." 1:17:00 Rei's tag again 1:20:05 In 86, blue represents death and red represents life... From the novels, "a far east religion says that blue is the color of the world of the dead, and all cultures see butterflies as symbols of the dead." The legion units have the blue light while the humans' machines has the red light. Here Lena is in blue... 1:33:03 The Nachzeher is based on a real life machine called the "Caspian sea monster" which was a prototype developed by the Soviets in the cold war.

Two more weeks of PEAK cinema to go!

I forgot to tell you this last time, so I will quickly point out: "Vladelina" when you pronounce it in Japanese sounds like "Bladirena" or "Bradirena". So "Bloody Regina" or "Bloody Reigna" (in the latter one g would be silent) are play on her name, with Japanese pronunciation. I forgot to mention it, when you saw her with red streak of hair.

Jan Negrey

HELL YEA, Ernst wasn't having that shit. ERNST 2028

Ren Lichtfoot

Since the Republic doesn't communicate with any nation no one has any way of knowing what happened and who is dead or alive. Since Shin hears legion voices from the capital of the republic he assumes the nation has fallen, and therefore assumes Lena is dead, knowing she would stay and make a last stand instead of running away. No one knows what actually happened to her or anyone else in the Republic.

Ryuuji Gremory

We don't know about Lena but for them the most logical answer is probably yes, she died. They know from Frederica’s power and the military reports that the Republic fell, and the main cause was the railgun. That’s why they talk the way they do assuming that she's dead. For us, the viewers, we don’t really know. Like you mentioned, back in the first cour they talked about who would be there for Shin when everyone else dies before him, and in that same conversation they said they were thankful to Lena because she probably became that person for him. During their lunch conversation, I think that’s what he 'didn’t realize' but everyone else already did, not completely sure though. Now Shin’s at his breaking point, stressed, mentally exhausted, with a lot of guilt guilt and on top of that he thinks Lena’s dead, which just reinforces his belief that everyone leaves him behind.

Ecodude

"Is it because she connected to everybody?" I'm really enjoying these reactions and your commentary on it, I am genuinely surprised by all the little details you're picking up on, even some stuff I only picked up on from my knowledge of the novels.

Darthpenguin

That's not entirely true. They chose to fight with Federacy and that's the main difference. Plus reason why they sent them on suicide mission is completely different too.. They don't want to kill them, but 86 are only option how to save their country, because they are best fighters... Also their unit is not only them, but soldiers from Giad too, that says a lot. Giad is not same as Republic....

Vít Pekárek

Varuna

I'm so glad you see the beauty in this show. It's easily in my top 5 anime and i feel others dont understand it as well as you do. Thank you very much, excited to see the rest with you!

IzMarty

Yeah, when you realize that they are all 16 years old, it makes it easier to understand why so many of the people in the Federacy are so viscerally opposed to sending them to the battlefield.

Benjamin Sones

I'm really glad the crowd here knows how to act and not spoiler things. I got spoilered on MHA Final season conclusion on EPISODE FREAKING 1 on another page. The person wasn't even sorry, didn't care and acted like it was no big deal because "its been released for years now". Yea buddy, I freaking avoided spoilers for YEARS just to get spoiled by some dunce in a comments section on Episode 1. I'd never wanted to reach through my computer screen SO MUCH, anyway. This is just a second thanks to all the people here who are respectful to both the reactor and everyone else. You all are the real MVP's

Ren Lichtfoot

Shin can hear where the Legion is, so General Altner (guy with eyepatch) is confirming it for himself and its accuracy. Shin starts to mark up the Republic, but since its overrun the military higher ups have written it off; Shin also comes to realize that with it being overrun the likelihood that Lena survived is low, and he had been counting on her to "carry them on" like he intoned before, "Will you remember us, too?" because he's tired of being the last man standing and wants it all to end--his smile in battle is that nihilism showing through. But with Lena gone, it means even that little wish is gone too. The flower field is death. Like elsewhere in other titles you've seen like Demon Slayer, the spider lily is Japan's death flower. Lena just crossed a field of them in Shin's mind.

3 episodes.. what could possibly go wrong

Abracalabrador

The smile that Shin has is him starting to embrace the insanity that is gripping his mind.

Akabendu

A lot of shows depict the horror of war but I think very few especially in the anime world show the ptsd of those horrors and how it effects the people fighting when they only feel at home fighting and don’t know how to live “normally” like 86 does and just the battles that they have to fight against themselves as well as the enemy It’s a show about war but 90% of the actual battles shown are the mental battles they face not the actual fight scenes

SecondCityKyle

A really cool detail the anime does is that EVERY single time we see Shin walking, we can't hear his footsteps. Like at 10:03, the only footsteps we hear are Raiden's. Frederica pointed it out before earlier in the season but it's cool to see that the anime makes it consistent. Like the grim reaper, he silently glides on the ground.

Kevin

Uncle does nothing but spit facts. He knows the Alba are despicable, that the 86 are marginalized and essentially being genocided. If the 86 did just bail and let the Alba get wiped out, he'd have no problem with it, in fact he thinks it's what SHOULD happen. When he says "if we're lucky, it'll just be a massacre", he's leaving the SA and pillaging part out, which is unfortunately way too common in these types of situations. Despite all that, he still walks his ass to the front lines with a rifle to buy Lena time so that her idealist dream gets one last chance of becoming the new reality instead of the corrupt system he's been stuck in for a decade. Lena keeps her pictures in a small pocket by her collar, that's what she's gripping.

Jake Thompson

Is it good now? :)
