The book had a more ambiguous ending. Also David and Amanda have sex in the book which I felt was the right choice leaving it out in the movie.

I always wanted a sequel to this movie in the same vein, one that showed how the army took on The Mist and its denizens. There have to have been some great fights. I mean, that Cthulhu-looking kaiju mofo is still out there, right? I just don't think any movie could have followed up that tragic ending.

2023-10-22 01:46:32 +0000 UTCAlso, the Stephen King short story this was based on ended with them just driving into the mist, leaving it up to the reader's imagination. Darabont added this ending, and showed it to King before it was even filmed and King loved it.

Anything he might have tried, like going to get gas, would have put him in a position where he might not be able to keep his promise to not let the monsters get his son. That's the best explanation I have for why he did it so quickly: anything else might have prevented him from keeping his promise.
