The book had a more ambiguous ending. Also David and Amanda have sex in the book which I felt was the right choice leaving it out in the movie.

You know how "Aliens" was a sequel to "Alien" that switched the genre from horror to action? I always wanted a sequel to this movie in the same vein, one that showed how the army took on The Mist and its denizens. There have to have been some great fights. I mean, that Cthulhu-looking kaiju mofo is still out there, right? I just don't think any movie could have followed up that tragic ending.

Also, the Stephen King short story this was based on ended with them just driving into the mist, leaving it up to the reader's imagination. Darabont added this ending, and showed it to King before it was even filmed and King loved it.

Like Anthony mentioned, Dave had to keep his promise. They gave us that scene with him making the promise to set up the ending. Anything he might have tried, like going to get gas, would have put him in a position where he might not be able to keep his promise to not let the monsters get his son. That's the best explanation I have for why he did it so quickly: anything else might have prevented him from keeping his promise.

Anthony's face, while Kacee watched that ending... it was perfection.
