Sketch Evolution

Just something I thought was spiffy and wanted to share with y'all! This Lineart Commission initially started out very different than it's finished form, (the bottom sketch being the one I ended up finishing.)

The client asked me to specifically show off the size of the wings compared to the body of the character. I initially went with a more Ref-Sheet-style pose - a more static, side-facing body shot showing a straight-on profile image of the body and the wings.

After doing a couple more pieces and returning to finish this piece, the initial sketched seemed so stiff to me. Sure, it showed off the size of the wings, but as a standalone body shot, was almost a bit boring. However, I still wanted to reconcile a dynamic body shot and pose while showing the size of the wings at the same time.

I decided to go with a low angle, with the wings reaching directly toward the viewer. This one offered me much more impact in terms of showcasing the character and also in terms of composition! The second sketch also offered a visually-interesting angle, depth, and a much greater sense of motion. <3
