Twilight is... NOT Freaking Out?! | My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Season 9 Episode 17 REACTION + Discussion

Comments

- Some notes/thoughts/facts: - I LOVE that hoodie! It looks even better than I thought! And sunset is there, neat ๐Ÿฅฐ The Legion of Doom is back! And they need infos about Grogars bewitching bell and how to use it... Cozy: "Oh my god, Roadtrip!" ๐Ÿ˜† - a Roadtrip to the Canterlot forbidden archives... that's interesting. And Twilight is again doing preparations for the "Summer Sun Celebration" and to our all surprise... she is calmly doing it without any freakouts... Twilight Sparkle: "With the exception of the odd trivia night, I've made a lot of progress since the Royal Swanifying Ceremony. You may not know this about me, but I occasionally freak out." - yes you do ๐Ÿ˜… and the Trivia Night was truly an odd occasion ๐Ÿ˜ But I bet it was just a reminder about how Twilight used to be ๐Ÿ˜… [beat] Twilight Sparkle: "That was a joke. I wanted to show you with the Summer Sun Celebration how much I've improved. So I focused on delegating and trusting others. It's been great!" - ๐Ÿคฃ - This is absolutely unexpected but welcome! ๐Ÿคฉ And they're ready to retire entirely to "leave behind the old to embrace the new"... It's the last Summer Sun Celebration, as it was a Symbol and reminder to Celestia's defeat of Luna (respectively Nightmare Moon) which is a tragic topic in Celestia's life, but also the reunification of them both as the Mane 6 rescued Luna from her evil ponysona Nightmare Moon. And so Twilight wants that Celebration to be extra special... and therefore has some further tasks for her friends which doesn't consist any long lists and scrolls of things... great growth! Somehow this whole moment is somewhat wholesome, to see Twilight calm and collected demeanor, albeit Discords advances for chaos and the way she covered everything that came up after the Legion of Dooms heist, was great! Yes Tirek was somewhere in an alleyway in S4 finale, but I am not sure if it was in Canterlot, even though it has similarities. Welp, at least the heightened (and hideous) Security measures are paying off as they're unable to get in directly... Discord: "And I'm supposed to..." [reading] "make sure Discord doesn't do anything 'Discord-y'? Well, that's annoyingly specific!" - Discord was outplayed by Twilight ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜ The Legion of Doom overheard the Mane 6, tasks and Chrysalis knows how to use that to their advantage Tirek stealthily drains the ponies Magic just enough so, that it still let's them have their cutie marks but make them feel weak, to incite the suspicion of bad gone food or an illness as distraction. Odering weather is indeed right, don't forget, that the weather in Equestria was always controlled by the Pegasus tribe and why Rainbow was taking care of the weather in Ponyville. That was emphasized as they were talking about the Everfree Forest that had its own uncontrollable weather that was mentioned in Season 1. What Twilight lacked in stress, the leader of the weather patrol, 'Feather Flatterfly', more than made up for as he becomes completely hysterical. None other than Fluttershy steps in to calm him down. - However it's not enough, as this leaves him vulnerable to Cozy Glow's scheme (which she is really good at), to think he can offload some of the tasks, but she manipulates them to suit her whims as another distraction that also result in chaotic weather. That fireworks pony is called Fire Flare, she is very proud of her job... maybe too proud ๐Ÿ˜… Proud enough to be taken advantaged by Chrysalis who diminishes her pride and speaks with ill will about mediocre tasks that undermines the superiority of Unicorns... Thus leading into them not doing the fireworks anymore... Tempests fireworks are too uncontrollable and not detailed enough for the intended purpose. But yeah would have been nice to see her again. Some fans considered Trixie for that job, but I don't see her in doing it this grand and intrinsic... And when it seemed like everything is in order After the disaster with the Sundial after the Swanifying, the princesses offer to give Twilight a lesson on how to use it. ๐Ÿ˜… And then everything goes down the drain and chaos ensues (and this time Discord isn't even at fault here ๐Ÿ˜…) - the plan of the villains distraction worked... even easier and better than anticipated... - there is no chance they would do that again, right? ...RIGHT? ๐Ÿ‘€ But Twilights friends try to hide that... because they fear she might revert after having her success of her new approach was stolen. They try to fix these problems on their own. Its funny how Discord just leaves after doing nothing and telling them, that they should rely on their teamwork... (well after all, Twilight forbid him to do any Discord-y stuff ๐Ÿ˜…) Cozy Glow: "Best... road trip... ever!" ๐Ÿคฃ Cozy not being known could be due to the new Guards that were placed all around the castle. Also, they don't know that she is out of Tartarus, so her threat level was low at this time. That weather-pattern is indeed crazy... never seen it like that, how was Cozy even able to do that ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Applejack: "I told y'all this was a bad idea! But nopony ever listens to me!" - you would think after all they have been gone through, they should know better, so her outburst here is definitely warranted. Still I can understand why they thought that. Twilight Sparkle: "And you thought not telling me everything was a total disaster would avoid a freak-out?!" - yep exactly! Discord is definitely disappointed about Twilights lack of outburst - she is still surprisingly calm... Twilight boring? Nah never! It was just fun while it lasted, but to see her like this is nice as the freakouts until now became way too predictable and somewhat stale. It has run it's course in a way. ๐Ÿ˜… Rainbow show off some new amazing technique that utilizes her Sonic Rainboom: https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/7/70/Rainbow_Dash_wraps_cloud_in_sonic_rainboom_S9E17.png https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/9/98/Rainbow_Dash_breaking_the_clouds_apart_S9E17.png Hm... what exactly are they doing here? - And everyone is thinking the same... https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/2/2d/Wensley_and_Apple_Bumpkin_pushing_party_cannons_S9E17.png All meanwhile the villains search for a manual... It was already the forbidden section of the archive with a lot of forbidden and secured books, and I would guess normally it would be secured with magic and something like that, but I would guess that Tirek is able to suck it up and place it again. Funny though, that Cozy used a book about keys to unlock the locked book. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/b/b3/Cozy_Glow_breaks_chains_with_a_book_S9E17.png - there also seems to be magic at play... At last the Mane 6 were able to fix everything (with the help of the princesses and others) and we come to the last Summer Sun Celebration. https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/f/f0/Unicorns_create_Mare_in_the_Moon_image_S9E17.png - nice touch, remembers me about the Series Premiere... ๐Ÿ˜ข Twilight is finally able to use the Sundial! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/5/58/Princesses_bathed_in_sun%27s_glow_S9E17.png - Epic Lensflare! Twilight Sparkle: [amplified] "This Celebration has always been a reminder not to fear the night, for there is always a new day to look forward to. But as we look towards Equestria's future, I am sad to say today will be the last Summer Sun Celebration." [crowd gasps] Twilight Sparkle: "Because there is something even more important to celebrate. There are two ponies who have watched over us night and day for as long as we can remember. We will no longer commemorate their battle or their reunion. Instead, we will take this day to celebrate how much they mean to all of us. From this day forward, today will be known as the Festival of the Two Sisters!" - This speech is great as it honors the princesses. It now celebrates them in a positive way and is also a reminder of their legacy they have left behind. It's so sweet and wholesome! Goosebumps-worthy indeed! https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/4/41/Pinkie_Pie_diving_toward_her_friends_S9E17.png - "Group hug!" ๐Ÿฅฐ https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/8/8d/Twilight_and_friends_in_a_pony_pile_S9E17.png Discord: "You know, it really does seem like you just might be ready for whatever comes next, your Majesty." - this was absolutely suspicious... as he seems to know something. And as almighty as he is, he might know about the League of Dooms plan... - But to what extend you know that already ๐Ÿ˜… And Tirek, Cozy and Chryssi reached their goal in unlocking the secrets of the bell... Cozy Glow: "You know, it really was super easy to get all those Earth ponies and Pegasi and unicorns to turn on each other." Queen Chrysalis: "It was, wasn't it? Now that is something to think about..." ๐Ÿ‘€ --- This episode really highlights the high-stakes tension building around the Legion of Doom while showing the Mane 6 taking on new challenges in a more mature way. It feels like the second time they indirectly gear up for Twilight's ascension to princesshood, especially with her and her friends organizing the last Summer Sun Celebration for Celestia and Luna. I love how much Twilight has grown as a leader: she used to freak out over tiny details, but now she stays calm and trusts her friends to handle their responsibilities, instead of falling into her usual "Twilighting". This change in Twilight might seem a bit sudden, but it's been building throughout the entire season. In the S9 Premiere, she had a huge meltdown, which laid the groundwork for her learning curve. "Point of No Return" taught her that perfection is impossible, and "Between Dark and Dawn" showed her the importance of delegating and understanding the ruler's role. Now, in this episode, we can see how those lessons come together to shape her into a poised leader. Watching her put all that new knowledge to work while handling the Summer Sun Celebration is both refreshing and rewarding, and it's a clear sign that she's ready to take on the responsibilities of a princess. The final Summer Sun Celebration really feels like the end of an era and the start of something new - especially with the introduction of the Festival of the Two Sisters. It's kind of bittersweet because this celebration has always been a symbol of Celestia's victory over Luna (or Nightmare Moon), which is obviously a very sad chapter in Celestia's life, but it also represents the moment the Mane 6 saved Luna from her evil side. Twilight wants this last celebration to be truly memorable, and I love how she handles it without relying on her usual laundry lists of tasks. It's a clear sign of her personal growth, and seeing her trust her friends instead of micromanaging everything is so refreshing. Also there is a lesson to take away to trust and accept the change, whether it's your own or someone else's - Twilights friends needed that reminder as it surely was surreal to see Twilight like this in this episode. ๐Ÿ˜ What really stands out is Twilight's heartfelt speech. She honors Celestia and Luna in such a sweet and wholesome way, almost turning something that used to be rooted in regret and loss into a new, uplifting tradition. The moment she renames the event, she's not only preserving the princesses' legacy but also opening up a future that values unity and the lessons learned from the past. It's a beautiful way to wrap up the old celebration while embracing a brand-new chapter in Equestria's history. Meanwhile there's an intense subplot brewing with the Legion of Doom secretly plotting against Grogar. Cozy Glow, Chrysalis, and Tirek are back at it, working together in ways that make the threat against Equestria feel more real than ever. Their manipulative streak is on full display, especially as they quietly stir up distrust among Earth Ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi to gain the upper hoof. I find it fascinating that they sneak into the forbidden archives at the Canterlot Library, hoping to find a spell that lets them harness the power of Grogar's bell. This whole scheme drives home just how determined they are to exploit every crack in Equestrian unity. It brings back memories of how easily Tirek almost overthrew everything in Season 4 (with Discord's unfortunate help), but now there's a sense that the published Friendship Journal and the School of Friendship might have fortified Equestria's defenses. Even though the bonds forged by Twilight and her friends feel stronger than ever, the Legion of Doom has proven they can cooperate and get really crafty and dangerous in the process, which adds an extra layer of suspense and excitement to the finale of the series. Overall this episode strikes a perfect balance between heartwarming moments and looming danger. Twilight's calm, collected leadership showcases how far she has come since her early days of stressing over every detail; she now trusts her friends and gracefully handles surprises. At the same time, Cozy Glow, Chrysalis, and Tirek demonstrate real teamwork after their experiences in "Frenemies", managing to pull off a daring heist to learn how to wield Grogar's bell. Both sides have clearly grown, yet this episode also reminds us that true growth involves trust, both in yourself and in others. Subtle hints of the Legion of Doom's intentions keep things tense, but it's undeniably wholesome to see Twilight ready to lead and prepared for whatever comes next. - Well Ed the End is neigh, our G4 journey will be over soon... ...it's a strange feeling. ๐Ÿ˜…
