Random Writing Lessons #2

Catharsis is a common motivation for writing. As a writer, you can experience cathartic emotion and release through your process as well as your characters but your catharsis is often covert and secondary. In structuring writing, especially when it is goal-oriented, it is important to centre the catharsis of the reader. You create the tension for the reader, you take them on an emotional journey that is entirely in your control, which means that at some point their emotions will peak and it is up to you to create that and to determine when and how you will release them from that. It is a delicate balance. If you create too much tension that never quite seems to release, they may not be motivated to carry on reading and if it's too little, they may never feel challenged or emotionally-engaged by the writing.
