Tips & Advice for Patreon Artists!

 Hi!

With more and more fellow artists joining us here, I thought I would write down some stuff I have learned from running this patreon page for over 5 years!  It seemed like there was some interest, so here it is!

If you aren't really interested in reading this giant wall of text, just enjoy the cute advice girl I sketched for this post and have a wonderful day!  lol

Preface!
Let me start off by saying that I don't claim to be an expert at running a Patreon or anything.  These points are just my own personal tips that I have learned through my own experience,  and maybe they will help someone of you creators or maybe it will just be a kind of interesting read.  With that said, here we go!

💗 Your patrons are your BIGGEST fans!  Take care of them, be their pal, and make them priority #1 when it comes to communication, releasing artwork, updates, and content.

💗Set up rewards that you can realistically deliver on a regular basis.  Don’t bite off more then you can chew.  More rewards can always be added as you go if you find that your productivity increases.

(EDIT: Adding this point because it is something I realized after posting this article but it is SUPER important!)
💗 Learn what your audience REALLY wants.  Not everyone wants the same thing and not every audience want the same thing.  This one can take a while and some trial and error to really hone in on and sometimes your audience is divided.

For example, for me, a chunk of my audience really appreciates NSFW content, and another part is here mainly for learning and tips.  Sometimes the categories overlap.  But if you find the bulk of your audience really wants to watch videos for entertainment and don't even own photoshop, then it might not be very beneficial for you to include something like psd's in your rewards.    My main point here is to do your research and homework on your audience (on patreon, but also on other social media platforms), and find out what they like, and what they want to see.

💗Keep regular updates flowing but also try not to spam your Patreon.  Lots of patrons get email notifications every time you post.  The last thing you want is to be sending too many emails, and become annoying.  (Sometimes I have trouble with this if I get a burst of inspiration and want to share all of it at once.  Oops and sorry!  Lol)

EDIT: Adding a little more specifics after some comment discussing!
I don't have a set schedule of max posts per week, but I try not to post more then once a day.  Sometimes it still happens, especially if it is a weekend or the end of the month.  I think ideally, posting every other day would be a good flow, but if you are super productive, then I think once a day is totally fine, or maybe you save and stack your images to post every other day.

💗Be authentic with your updates and the “voice” you write with in your posts.  Many patrons aren’t just your patron because they like your art or rewards, they also are there to support YOU and they like your personality and journey.  Let your personality show.

💗Expect that every once and a while you will lose some patrons(usually at the very end and/or beginning of a month).  You never know the reason but usually it is just that a financial situation has changed, or even just that an old payment method hasn’t been updated in the system.  I know it doesn’t feel good but try to not dwell on it or feel sad about it.  It’s out of your control and be grateful that that patron loved your art so much that they supported you for the time that they were able!

💗 Always be open to asking or hearing out suggestions from your patrons, and what they want to see in content, rewards and goals!

💗Schedule rewards prep, promotion graphics, etc and anything you need to do for that stuff in your calendar.  I have not perfected this, but it’s something I have been trying to improve on so as to ease the mad scramble at the end of the month to get everything put together for art packs. 😅

💗Promoting your Patreon.  This one is still something I struggle with.  It’s important to not be afraid to let your followers know that you have a Patreon and provide links so that it is AS EASY AS POSSIBLE for them to follow and look at your Patreon.

But it’s also important to not spam too much and make it sound like it’s all you talk about.

❗️*Warning! soapbox/real talk time!*❗️

💗 I think it is important to watch your tone when advertising your Patreon.  For example, I have seen some updates from artists(no one here, mind you.) that tend to come across as very “beggy” or “desperate” when tweeting about how they wish they had more patrons, etc.   it doesn’t come across as nice, fun, or professional when that type of tone is used when trying to grow your Patreon.

Maybe this is just my opinion, but think of yourself as a business and a professional.  If a business tried to advertise using pity tactics, that would be the most annoying ad ever!

Sorry if this sounds harsh... but it’s a pet peeve of mine that I have been seeing a lot lately.

Also, don’t worry, I am not referencing any of you artists who are supporting here!  The example is just from some other folks I have seen.

💗 A little more real talk incoming:

💗 Realize that unless you are already a very famous artist, your growth on Patreon is probably going to be slow.  Not only that, but more and more artists are joining the platform, which does mean more competition.  It’s just how it is.  Focus on the Patrons you have and improving your work more and more.  Let Patreon support your improvement as an artist, and the growth will be natural, even if it is somewhat slow.  Don’t be discouraged by that.

💗Take care of yourself and your health.  It’s easy to get swept up in all the work and business that Patreon can create, but remember to take 'you time'.  Remember, your Patrons are your biggest fans, and typically they will totally understand and support you if you need a little R&R between pumping out so much awesome content.  🤗

Good luck my fellow creatives!

Tips & Advice for Patreon Artists!

I am soooooo glad you found it helpful! Yeah, the challenging thing about promotion is exactly what you said. The fact that there are so many artists promoting their patreon and that followers might get tired of it. I guess the way I have tried to handle this, although I don't claim that it is the correct way, is to usually post a patreon promotion to let people know if I have added something new, or to show off a reward specific to that time/month/artpack. I don't really post general promotions that list out all of the general rewards for my patreon anymore, but I have had my patreon for quite a while so I feel like many of my followers already know or have an idea of what I offer. I do always post the art pack collage thing to show off the artpack of the month to an actual instagram post. It never gets very good engagement but it lets people know what's going on, and acts as a fun summary for all the art that I accomplished. Then later I will usually delete that post so that my instagram grid isn't too cluttered with patreon stuff. For the amount of posts: I don't have a set schedule of max posts, but I try not to post more then once a day. Sometimes it still happens, especially if it is a weekend or the end of the month. I think ideally, posting every other day would be a good flow, but I know that you are super productive, so if you have more then that I think once a day is totally fine, or maybe you stack your images to post every other day.

Oh dear this was so helpful! Thank you so much for taking the time to write all these tips for us! 💙 I always struggle with the promotion part, I feel a lot of artists have Patreon so it seems like people can feel really tired of all the promotions! :S And maybe you have talked about this before (sorry if that's the case!) but do you have a schedule planned or a max in the number of posts you share every month? The constant email notifications can be a bit annoying and I'm still afraid of that! :( I wish there was an option for not sending a email every time a new thing is posted... since I usually send the rewards by email when the month starts as well hehe Well, thank you so much Chrissa, you are a sweetheart 💙

Ah! I am soooo glad you found it helpful! Everyone is on their own art journey and I think that being able to focus on improving your own skills without outside pressure is a really great place to be! Don’t let fear hold you back when you do start to feel like sharing your work with the world! You can actually see a lot of my old work if you go back far enough on Instagram and especially deviantART. There’s no requirement that an artist meet a certain bar or experience level to start sharing their work if they feel like sharing. :)

This is so helpful. I’m way behind the curve as I don’t have any posts on Insta let alone a Patreon to share my art since I don’t feel I’m at the skill level in my art journey that warrants sharing yet (and of course I have a heavy dose of fear about putting stuff out there). At the moment I’m just focusing on doing what I can to improve my art and be consistent in creating without outside pressure. Hopefully I’ll be able to follow the path so many artists I look up to have and open my own Patreon someday. You’re a big inspiration Chrissa so thanks! :)

I'm glad you found it helpful! Yeah, running a patreon is a challenge! I have had to switch around and "relaunch" rewards a few times as well, but that's not a bad thing. In fact, it helps you hone in on what you and your patrons want and keeps things fresh. Ah, yes, engagement on Patreon isn't the best compared to other social media platforms. I try not to worry too much about engagement here. Whenever there is a comment or message, I always try and reply as quickly as I can, so as to encourage more engagement in the future. But here are some other things I have thought might help a bit: Using the "lense" feature every once and a while seems to get some patrons more engaged and it lets them know about the app. Things that require interaction outside of just commenting and liking, like polls also help I think. Something else that goes partway into advertising but also part way into patreon engagement: Posting in an instagram story, or a post wherever you have a social media presence to let people know about this cool thing you posted on patreon recently can also help just let your current patrons know that there is a new thing if they haven't checked Patreon in a while. And, if you have some patrons who are active on other social media, its okay to engage with them there as well. I have patrons who I chat with more on instagram, through my facebook page, on tumblr, and twitch. It depends on where they usually hang out. TBH it can get a little confusing for me, but it isn't too bad. haha

This was so helpful and inspiring! Having my own art patreon, it is difficult and I’ve had to switch tier rewards many times and discuss with my patrons about where I actually stand. What would you suggest for engagement? I don’t think my patrons really understand there’s ans app and I’ve tried to reach out a few times about it

Yay! I feel very wordy, but there was a lot to say! lol
