“Freyja is most gently born (together with Frigg): she is wedded to the man named Ódr… [who] went away on long journeys, and Freyja weeps for him, and her tears are red gold. Freyja has many names, and this is the cause thereof: that she gave herself sundry names, when she went out among unknown peoples seeking Ódr: she is called Mardöll and Hörn, Gefn, Sýr.”
– Gylfaginning, Brodeur Translation
As I started drawing the full piece of Freyja as part of the next goddess series, I stumbled onto this myth about her golden tears and the image just stood out so much in my mind that I decided to jump on a quicker portrait of her.
Golden tears itself is just a striking image but I also like how it is such a juxtaposition. These are tears shed from sadness and loneliness, and yet they are so delicate and beautiful.
I feel like doing this portrait first also gives me a little more of a jumping off point for her design and I am excited to continue working on her full piece!
