🎞️How Lighting Works on a Face//TUTORIAL

How I approach Lighting Faces!  Here I go over what I keep in mind when lighting faces, planes of the face, the difference between cast shadows and form shadows, and common features and highlights to keep in mind!

If you haven't already seen it, I recommend also watching the how I shade tutorial for the basics of how I tend to shade:

There might be!! I’ll check in photoshop and get back to you about it tomorrow morning!

ChrissaBug

is there any brush similar to what the smooth watercolor in CSP does for Photoshop?

Sektrah

Oh, strange! Let me take a look and see what's going on with the video

ChrissaBug

Oh no, the video is missing?

Lizemijn

Yay! I'm so glad it's helpful!! Thanks for letting me know!

Oh for sure! When it comes to finding form, if you can figure out the basic planes and then how light hits those planes on whatever you are drawing, then you are golden! And when it comes to how I digitally shade, I usually use the same hard light layer mode for whatever I’m shading as well.

ChrissaBug

Trying this out right now and it's working great! Would you say this method also applies to other parts of a drawing? (hair, clothes, etc.)

Catherine j

Haha, yeah I can totally see the 'keystone' thing. It is that exact shape

ChrissaBug

I’m so glad it was helpful! Yeah that is a very good idea to do some more tutorials on specific lighting situations like that! I’ll definitely add it to the list of future tutorials!

ChrissaBug

So helpful!! So happy I joined your patreon!! I'd love to learn more about things like environmental lighting such as bright daylight, or night time or even shadows coming from a tree canopy!! :D

Elmie

HOLY shit Chirssa. thank you! I see the keystone, do you see.. the keystone?!! haha. I find that funny, i just posted a few of my practice drawings representing the keystone between the eyes.

KrisKris_Miller
