🎨Traditional Art//Summer Slumber

Hello hello lovelies! ✨ Traditional art time! 🎨 For this one, I decided to explore mixing watercolor and colored pencil. 🌈

I love colored pencils but BOY HOWDY, they are a bit tedious, especially when filling areas like the background!  So to try and alleviate some of that, I decided to lay down a watercolor base first! 💧🌿 I do love the look of messy watercolor indications of foliage behind her.

As for doing a traditional version of Summer Slumber, I can't say exactly why I felt so drawn to this piece. 🤔❤️ It isn't a hugely popular piece, but for some reason, it just kept tickling my mind.  I think maybe the vibe of it just felt like it would fit well with a traditional medium.

You may notice that a big difference between the digital version and this version is the HAIR.  Partway through trying to get the pale blond colors to work with colored pencils, I just decided to give up on it. 🙈 It wasn't working well, but the good thing is that since it was so light, it was easy to darken it into an eye-popping red.  So she is now a redhead, and I think it suits her color scheme quite well! ❤️

There's so much layering that has to happen with colored pencils that I think my wrist needs a little break after this one.  Next month, I think I'll probably give colored pencils a rest and work with all paint instead. 🎨🖌️ Maybe watercolor and/or gouache. 🌈🌟 Something that will be gentle on my poor, exhausted wrist and fingers. 🙏

Here are the tools I used for this piece: 🛠️

I recorded the process and have uploaded the Draw-With-Me Traditional Art Process Video for you!  If you are interested in pulling out your own pencil and paper to work with me or if you want to color the provided lineart to color the same piece, feel free!. 📹

I know!! I have to choose if I want to draw that day or play games. Can’t have both haha. I’ve been getting into watercolor together with water colored pencils. They work ao well together. Also trying to understand oil pastels. Cool how you can put light on dark. Reminds me of digital. Also so much yummy texture!! I bought sone cheap colored pencils from the book store and they work great!

Thanks! Yeah, I feel you! It is sometimes so hard to pull myself away. My mind wants to work but my hands say "nooooo!{ Haha! What kind of mediums or subjects have you been exploring?

ChrissaBug

You are just spoiled by your digital tools. Imagine painting the Sistine Chapel! ;)

Wish your hands and wrists a speedy recovery! I have to force myself to take breaks. I just wanna draw all the time, but my hands are disagreeable. I love that you’re trying out traditional. I’m also exploring it recently and it hits different!

Thank you so much Lia!! It is interesting to take a piece that I've already tackled and see how it transforms and is different in a different medium. How it stands on its own!

ChrissaBug

Wow...this one stands all on its own just as the first does! Beautiful colours, how they all flow together so well. Nicely done! And yes, self care on the wrists and hands!
