I had lots of fun with this piece and imagining the dark tale between these two characters as I drew and painted. One of my favorite things about drawing without a plan is the process of discovery that takes place. I rarely have a super clear image in my head of what I'm going to paint. There are occasions where I have a clearer idea, but more often then not I either have a vague idea or no idea at all, and that's where the process turns into an adventure.
As I work on a piece like this, my mind starts to flesh out personalities, backstories and conflicts around the characters I am drawing. And then once the piece is complete, I write the short little prose about the scene that I post here on patreon for you guys.
What about you guys? Do you often have an image in your head before you begin drawing, or do you discover the drawing as you go?

Hi Jessica! I know what you mean. I think that in the past year, I have started thinking a lot more about story as I am working on a piece exactly because I was experiencing a kind of flat or empty feeling from drawing random characters with no story around them. Now I still draw random characters but anchoring them in at least a small piece of a story, even if I don’t think out the entire thing, really helps me with details and investing myself in the artwork.

2023-09-14 06:06:25 +0000 UTCI was thinking about their back story as I watched. It's gotta be beautiful, and tragic.... I don't always have a story behind characters, and I think that's sometimes why they fall flat. Perhaps I need to work on thinking of feeling or something before jumping in.
