So you remember how I said I was looking forward to drawing these characters again? 😊 Well, I didn't have to wait long! 🎨 I was so honored to be commissioned to do these grayscale character illustrations that will be printed in the first edition of Fate Calls the Elf Queen! 📚✨ Here is Layala, the female lead of the book series!
I really love her because she is such a badass character with a lot of fight and magic!
Keep your eyes peeled for the next couple character portraits to be posted soon!
The author came to me with a pretty tight deadline ⏰📆 so that it would be done in time for printing, and we decided that going with grayscale would be the best option, especially since they would be printed in grayscale anyway. 🖤 And I actually LOVED working in this sort of grayscale style that really relies on texture and tone. 🎨🖌️ It was a bit of a breath of fresh air to not have to worry about color 🌈 and I kind of love the nostalgic and poetic look of grayscale. 📷✨ What do you guys think? 🤔
Working in this style did require some really strong (in terms of quality, not boldness) lineart though, so the part that took the longest was definitely the lineart, especially in areas that had a lot of details. 🖋️✒️ You can take a look at the lineart and the sketch by scrolling through the image stack.
Just a heads up that I am currently still away riding trains through Scotland 🚆🏴, but will be back in the middle of next week! 👋🗺️
