🎨TUTORIAL//Rendering Chrissabug's way

In this tutorial I'm going to guide you through my process of rendering an artwork!

Rendering is NOT my favorite process, which is a reason why I've developed an approach that relies quite a bit on lineart, textured brushes and layer styles, with some paintover in the later half of the process.  My goal with rendering is to clean up the art just enough without OVER rendering and making a blurry digital-looking mess.  I want my work to feel like it has some of that traditional grit!

I hope this tutorial will offer some helpful insights and ideas to incorporate into your own process!

My pleasure! Yeah, sometimes things happen quickly in tutorials and I need to go back and rewatch tutorials to make notes of things like you suggested! I hope this tutorial helps push you towards a look that you like!

ChrissaBug

Thank you for the video - I may need to watch it again and make notes, haha. I have been struggling with getting the flat colours to something more finished and I am not so much a fan of the flat blended look (Probably why I love your style) now I just need to improve my line art to practise!

My pleasure! Thanks for watching! I usually layer the paper texture on top of all the other layers so that it will be visible on everything. Sometimes if I want even more texture in the background, I will add another layer of paper texture just above layer one or any background layers but below the character layers.

ChrissaBug

Thanks for your videos! Do you use Paper Texture as an Picture in an new layer above all layers or as Paper Texture in Layer one "Paper"? Thanks.

Thank you! So glad you liked it! Were you able to grab the wet watercolor brush download from the bottom of the post?

ChrissaBug

Love the tutorial!

Hi! Thank you so much for saying so! It makes me super happy to hear that the tutorials have been helpful!! I have been trying some out and trying to make one that is close. It’s tricky because the watercolor “edge” functionality in procreate works a bit differently then in clip studio so it’s hard to get the same look. I’m gonna keep trying, but for now what I do to try and get a similar final result in the artwork itself is use The Maxpack watercolor brushes(they are available to purchase. Just google maxpack watercolor and I think they should come up) and to blend, instead of relying only on the eraser and brush like I do in this tutorial, I set the smudge tool to something like the maxU watercolor smudge heavy bloom.

ChrissaBug

Hi, I just joined! I absolutely love your style, and your tutorials have already helped me improve my artwork so much!! Do you know of a good brush similar to the wet watercolour for Procreate?

No worries! Ask as many questions as you want! For the initial shadow setup, I stick with one color. Since I use a hard light layer mode, the one color still blends well with the colors that it’s on top of. And for the warmer background I would go with a gray that is it tinted with a bit of orange probably. Also, even if you don’t have the background in yet, it can be helpful for shading to at least roughly have the general color of the background behind the character. Just so that you have an idea of how the character will look within that color of environment

ChrissaBug

quick question when setting up the basic shadows (with the hard soft brush) do you use that one ambient color shadow for the whole piece? I didn't see you changed the colors, but I want to make sure - also when you don't havea background yet (but will be brownish/yellowish - how would you pick up the base shadow color? sorry for the many questions :D

Have you imported other csp brushes into clip studio before? Photoshop brushes should import the same way. Just extract the set from the zip file and then drag and drop the brushes into your brush panel in csp. I do want to make a csp basic workspace and intro tutorial soon, and will go over how to import brushes but I don’t have it made yet.

ChrissaBug

Is there tutorials on how to get the Sparkles brush pack into CSP?

SwellerSpade0

Oh nuuuu! Haha! Well now you know and it will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

ChrissaBug

Here I've been manually toggling between color and transparent like an idiot when I could have clicked C all this time :')

Faedusk

Omg! It makes me so happy to hear that it was helpful and you have some motivation!! Let's goooo!!! 🎨💪

I have been struggling so much lately with over-rendering my work and this tutorial was so helpful!! Thank you so much for making it! I finally have the motivation to paint again!

My pleasure tea! Thank you for watching!

ChrissaBug

My pleasure and thank you! For the procreate brush, let me think on it and play around a bit and get back to you!

ChrissaBug

thank you so much for sharing, very insightful tutorial

This is an amazing tutorial and piece of art! Thank you. I just signed up, and I am wondering if you have a brush like the wet watercolor brush you use for blending but for procreate? I went through my watercolor brushes I already have and none of them seemed to do the trick.
