A little about the process
After a while of feeling a little creatively drained, it's always nice to run into a piece that flows easily. This piece was like that. I struggled a little bit with the sketch at the beginning but once I decided on what I wanted, this piece just came together.
Something I feel really happy with in this piece is that it isn't over rendered. Even though rendering isn't my favorite, I often find myself getting drawn into spending a lot of time in that process. That especially happens when I work on client work, because I want to do a "good job" and make sure my clients are happy. But in the end, overrendering doesn't always make a piece better.
Part way through this piece, I made a very distinct decision to NOT over-render, and in order to do that I had to make very distinct lighting decisions early on and have solid reference. So I took a moment to take top down lighting reference of myself rather then trying to guess about the lighting. And omg! Why haven't I been doing this before? I already often use my own reference for anatomy, why not also use it for lighting? It helps so much!!
It's something I want to try doing more often. Make distinct line art and lighting decisions early on and take exact lighting reference so that I don't feel like I have to spend 15 hours rendering to try and bring the piece together because I hadn't been decisive early on.
