A little about the process

As I mentioned in the art post, this piece was completely unplanned. After focusing so much on some client work, I really wanted to just draw something for fun when I livestreamed last week. (speaking of which, we'll be live on twitch tonight! 7pm CET! twitch.tv/chrissabug).

Sometimes going in without any plan or expectations helps a piece flow easier. Not always. There are times that having a solid plan, helps the piece flow. I think it just depends on where your brain is at in the moment!

Anyway, when I got to the colors, I did the shadows a little different then usual. Typically I start with my "hard light" layer mode for the shadows trick. But for this one, since I dropped in a strong overhead light source, I just painted in the shadows without using any fancy layer modes. I did use a glow layer for the light though!

You may notice in the timelapse that before I add in the circle and rays design, I try painting in some swirling blood, as if she is doing some blood magic. But then I decided I didn't really like that direction. I'm much happier with the overall story of the piece without blood.

Like I mentioned in the art post, I love that the color scheme of this piece feels kind of ethereal. A mix of the black void background, with her pale form.
