A little about the process

Here was another piece that started without much of a plan that I threw together in between client work. I think the video for this one is really cool because it is easy to see and follow the build-up, especially in the armor painting.

My goal as I worked on this piece was to not over render. I really wanted to try and rely and use the cool blobby texture of the watercolor brush that I was using. I think that especially shows in the armor.

It can be really hard to hold back from spending tons of time rendering every little thing but sometimes the most interesting and charming effects in art come from the rough imperfection of it! Especially when you are going for a watercolor or gouache look!

How about you guys? Do any of you struggle with over-rendering or making things too smooth?

I want to develop the skill and style that embraces a rough look in an appealing and natural way!
