A Little About the Process:
This was a super spur-of-the-moment artwork. I have known that one of the things I've been wanting to do randomly a bit more with my work is bookish art here and there, and I just relistened (I have the audiobook versions) to Fourth Wing and Iron Flame, so I figured, why not? Let's do a piece of Violence and Xaden.
I worked on a lot of the lineart for this piece live on stream but ran into issues with Xaden's jacket not feeling quite right. I thought the asymmetrical look would be cool and interesting, but it ended up looking too much like a formal military uniform. Maybe that would have changed once the color was in, but I decided to just go ahead and change the design.
When I started adding color, things began to come together, which is interesting because usually, when I start adding color, there's a phase where nothing feels cohesive. One thing that I think helped with that in this piece is that I actually reused the cloudy lightning background from my Oya piece. I really loved that background and thought it fit well with this piece too, so I decided to use it as a base! If you have already drawn something before and can reuse it for another illustration, why not?
Anyhoo, I hope you guys like how they turned out!
In other news, I'll be starting work on the Character Interactions Tutorial this upcoming week! I have been putting a lot of thought into the tutorial, and I think I have a really good and simple way to break down the topic for you guys! So I'm excited about that! (hint: this piece where characters are standing, as if for a portrait, is not a good demo of character interactions. lol)
So keep an eye out for that tutorial, probably at the end of the week!
