It overcomplicates things and leaves plot holes but that's how it works unfortunately. We learned this originally in DBZ from cell when he said he killed an alternate future trunks from another future timeline to go back to OUR present (The one where we were watching cell saga play out).

It's never really explained as far as I know, but in my headcanon it's similar to Vegeta's rage after Beerus slapped Bulma, except now Goku and Vegeta's SSJ Blue energy has sort of rubbed off on Trunks, and in the depths of his rage, he was somehow able to summon some of that energy, without actually going Blue himself.
