By being a living human, the most he could ever do was replace his body with that of a puppet. However pain and suffering isn't just a physical sensation. His puppet body could not be harmed. But on the flipside. With a puppet body that couldn't feel anything. Good or bad. He could now only feel what he felt inside his heart, and as you can see. What he felt inside was pure pain.
