January 1 Billing Paused

Hello!

I decided not to charge anybody for this month because I haven't made enough progress to justify getting paid. I was thinking about it since you guys gave me feedback on my last post which, together with the messages on discord is what solidified this decision. Even if I don't reply, just know that I do read everything on the server. I just thought I'd be able to respond better in a post here.

It's completely true that fucking around with the colours was not the right move at this time. I should've moved on/ left it until after the game was done/ started doing it when I start working on the remaster.

Instead I doubled down and spent most of this month doing them (and afterwards the backgrounds as well). I thought they'd be well received but my stupid ass didn't think about the fact that not everyone has the same display. Mine has never been colour calibrated so it's obviously going to look different than the next person's.
As I stated in a comment, a zip file with the original png's will be made available for download.
Still, it wasn't beneficial for everyone therefore it's a huge L.

Another time sink, which in hindsight was avoidable, was setting up the sprites. In short, I used to save the sprites as a single image, with different copies for every expression x every outfit, which was always a dreadful process saving the images. Whereas now they're broken into layers and made into what you see in game with code. I thought I knew what I was doing but clearly not. InfiniteCanvas can attest to that. At least they should work as intended now and I'm able to move on.

The only thing that could've been a saving grace is if I got to, let's say, the halfway point with the dialogue. But that's not the case either. I still only got a few scenes done, about 10k words' worth. Normally that would be fine but for this update that's barely anything.
In the Christmas period I had to de-mold (is that a word?) the apartment because the stuff appeared everywhere. Then my friends were in town and I was able to meet them for the first time in about half a year. Hangovers are getting harder and harder. These all meant another couple of days without progress.

So that's that. I'd like to apologize for being ignorant and so close to the end I still proceeded to do things nobody asked for. Had I stuck with what worked before I might've been able to deliver this month. Had I not gotten hell bent on redoing the art I could've delivered in October. It's become a vicious cycle and it only ended because I was satisfied with the art.
Call it perfectionism, and while it's true that I want to make the game the best I can, all of that comes from a place of insecurity and wanting to feel some form of self-satisfaction. Which I honestly did feel when looking at my art progress this year and those moments being so rare, are worth a lot to me.
Still it's debatable if it was worth the price of losing most people's trust. Probably not, and honestly if I managed/ thought things through better we might not have ended up like this.

It's no use to be regretful though. What's done is done and I'm ready to make more mistakes in 2023.
Once again, thank you for all your support! Everyone, have a happy new year!
BP

P.S.: The images are from sprite testing.

Unless I'm forced to quit by some life event that won't happen. This is the only thing so far I enjoyed doing and thought was meaningful. I've got many other stories to tell and hopefully in the future I'll be able to do that with more efficiency.

Honestly, even if you're not the fastest creator, I think you beat yourself too hard sometimes. Your pace is still kind of acceptable (for me) and I think most of us are just glad the project is advancing. Just one (kinda unrelated) thing: please stay a creator forever (lol), as you're one the best. I saw a bit too many devs quitting the best games, maybe it was pressure for some (well at least Babysitters dev came back).

Fabien

I assume it's easy to add but I'll have to look it up at a later time.

BootyProfessor

Could you add a feature where we can change the names? Idk if that’s possible the way things are set up rn

Ameonna Wesley

tbh no need to be a perfectionist if you release as is it would be great

dale

I know that the expectations continue to grow exponentially with the time taken. However, the update won't be the second coming of NTR Jesus, it's still the same shoddily written story by yours truly. Only with better art. But indeed, I have no intention of rushing it right at the end after all this time.

BootyProfessor

I'm familiar with WIAB also another case of never ending remakes is The Adventurous Couple. With that in mind I made a promise to myself and at one point I think I declared it even here that I wouldn't go down the same route. Yet here we are. I don't regret doing it only the way I went about it. With better planning it could've been a lot smoother. I'll make a more detailed post of my development experience and what went wrong after the release. As to your suggestion I've been thinking about it since another long time patron shared similar thoughts on discord. I'm just gonna say that I'll consider as many possibilities as I can to change things around here for the better.

BootyProfessor

Not trying to stress you out but personally the longer your projects takes the more excited and hopeful I am for the finished product. I have been avoiding the Discord for want of not spoiling myself on as much as possible. I sincerely hope this passion project lives up to your vision for it. Every time I am reminded of this game I nearly boil over in anticipation. So please, do take your time polishing this gem-in-the-rough. That said I can whole heartedly understand where others would come from with concern over the development progress so far. As someone myself who often gets hyper-fixated on a singular thing to the point of forgetting to eat, I would like to think I can relate a little to your recent fixation (obsession ?) with a particular point in your project. It is easy to loose yourself in that fixation, especially if your getting frequent sensations of elation/relief from making noticeable progress. Am I being to presumptuous again? Anyway I look forward to your next official release so I may enjoy this passionate project to its fullest "blindly".

Honestly, I'm probably going to unsubscribe after this game finishes unless the new project is my style, so feel free to ignore my advice. What happens to games like Demon Boy or Where It All Began is that the creators become so obsessed with putting out the perfect update, that they release nothing until that update is perfect. In the case of Where It All Began, he became so obsessed that he literally became a master of the craft and remade the game. I think that, regardless of quality, you should have a set release date every month where you put out all that you have done. Even if it's just one image you've done that month, you put it out. Why? People pay for the product and having even an incremental update is satisfying, that's why people would donate thousands to access early alphas back for Kickstarters. You can put it up for a much higher tier if that makes you feel better about it. But as I said, feel free to ignore.

John Ortega

I thought so too but I got used to the new look with time.

BootyProfessor

any progress is progress no matter the amount! Happy New Year! Excited for your work in 2023😁

Jzfire

It's your project, I believe it'll be a better outcome if you do it the way you enjoy doing it

Sennoden

Happy new year you perfectionist madlad ^^ tbh I always feel that everyone should be happy with the game, creator very much included. No point in rushing if you hate it in the end and it affects the next title... that being said I can't wait to finally play it ;P

Scyllicious

it looks good, i dont know why, but the only one that feels off to me is riley, i dont know if it is because of the better details or the new way you color or the shading, but riley looks kind of weird compared to how she looked before and she is the only one because the rest of the characters look better.

kaminoz

It is lol

BootyProfessor

looking at the screenshots....is that a JoJo reference?!?! But really they do look great especially Mia as always. the ground work is now laid though. think of it as an investment. everything from now on will be easier and better.

Mochi

Haha, I don't think it's that bad yet? Or who knows. I'll be posting a write up of my experiences with this game once it's done. You all will be able to judge how bad it is. One thing's for sure, Kubrick's art is damn great.

BootyProfessor

I definitely want to learn how to manage time/ updates. That has been my downfall every time. Appreciate the concern, it will work out. Have a good one!

BootyProfessor

Your art has reminded me of Stanley Kubrick lately. Every single frame was a painting that had to be exactly how he envisioned it. The actors often hated him because he'd make them do dozens of takes for everything (famously 148 for one scene in The Shining). The fans loved him though, because his works were masterpieces. This is feeling similar, with some Patrons being the actors, and the public being the fans. Perfectionism can be good and bad, it's all about perspective, but in the end, what will be remembered is the art

Son of Odin

Cheers! Hopefully it's gonna be better for all of us!

BootyProfessor

It's all a learning experience, not just the coding, art and game design, but also the time management, setting tasks, learning when 'good enough' and quick is sometimes better than being the best but being slow. Speaking for myself at least, you haven't lost my trust. You've been pretty transparent about what's going on and why. If I had been feeling duped, it would have been the work of 30 seconds for me to pause my patronage of you until the next update. I will just say that while this gesture of goodwill is appreciated, don't put yourself at any risk. Bills are insane these days, I think we'd rather pay in January if it risked you missing bills/rent/etc. Take care, have a happy new year, and as always we wait with baited breath to see how this story ends.

Son of Odin

No doubt, everything should be smoother thanks to getting the EXP here lol

BootyProfessor

It's not all bad! I am sure these mistakes will make the process of making your next game smoother! I am excited for the update. I hope 2023 will be a great year for you.

dska

All the shit that goes wrong now lays the groundwork for the next game lmao Godspeed my dude

InfiniteCanvas

Imma save a nut for a month just for this release
