Hello friends,
Well the last three months has been a ride eh? In the midst of so much global turmoil and division I feel very lucky to be able to log in to our Monday portrait class every week and be able to draw in the company of such a kind, supportive, international community. It is a small comfort and I can't tell you all how much I appreciate you all.
Now, down to brass tacks...we've come to the end of our painting term here at Draw and we're now looking ahead to three months focusing on printmaking, with a specific focus on planographic processes like lithography & monotype. This needn't influence your work of course, but if you've ever been curious about printmaking, now is the time to indulge that curiosity! Here's what we have coming up...
If you're new to the Patreon or if you haven't signed up to a paid tier and want to know what you'd get access to, have a look at our 'Start here' page, or get in touch on info@draw-brighton.co.uk. Here's what you can expect to see coming up over the next few months...

Each of our academic years is split into four themed terms to help you explore different materials and discover new artists. This spring (March/April/May) we’re going to focus on planographic printmaking, with online and in-person events themed around print processes and printmakers. Here are all of the special events we're putting on that follow the theme, in addition to regular weekly normal programme. As a reminder, our Experimental Life Drawing sessions are free for anybody on the Life Drawing & Student tier and our Etc. Artist talks are free & public, funded by our paying supporters.

Lots of people aspire to paint, but it's always been harder for us to encourage people to have a go at printmaking. We've always found that once people try it they love it, but the umbrella of printmaking covers so many different processes it can often seem inaccessible for beginners. Our main printmaking tutor Scarlett Rebecca recently set up her own Patreon HERE collecting all of her 'Printmaking at Home' courses into one place, developed during her time as technical demonstrator at Brighton university and intended to help people print from home with or without a press. She has offered a discount to all Draw Patreon followers for the print term, so if you're keen to try drypoint, monotype, linocut, woodcut, monotype or lithography on foil, wood or lino she has pre-recorded online courses with live sessions ALL accessible from a single, affordable subscription.
Throughout March, April & May 2025 you can redeem a 25% discount on Scarlett's printmaking Patreon using the code DRAW25 at the checkout - the Print Studio Tier gives access to ALL her online courses, the Live Zoom Tier gives access to the online courses, plus live practice sessions.
You can sign up for free to try out the monthly 'Print Club' sessions
Scarlett's new book Alternative Lithography is available to pre-order, released in the UK on the 22nd April!

We're currently planning our new photo-sets for the next 18 months and have just shot an AMAZING new series of poses with touring international models Hannah Jay, Andrea & Mariana alongside our UK-based team. We have so many great images from those shoots that we've nudged our Pre-Raphaelite series into early 2026. Here's our plan for our upcoming sets (new ideas always welcome!):
Spring 2025 - A domestic photoset series of group tableau, requested by you and photographed by Justyna Neryng - see the teaser set HERE!
Summer/Autumn/Winter 2025 - New photo-sets from Hannah Jay, Shardae-Rose, Andrea & Mariana, plus guest models photographed by Justyna Neryng.
Spring 2026 - A Pre-Raphaelite inspired photo-set series shot by Justyna Neryng.
Further into 2026 - A folk-lore inspired series directed by Nomi Mcleod

We are a non-profit making organisation and all of the money we make here on Patreon is re-invested into our community of models, artists & tutors. I volunteer for Draw three days a week while all of the rest of the team are paid freelancers: Sara & Scarlett, with support from Megan, take care of the background admin, Lance looks after the physical studio in Brighton and our team of tutors & models keep the classes ticking over (my income comes from writing instructional drawing books and teaching for art galleries). At the moment Draw still doesn't break even and is subsidised by my book sales, so we don't make a profit; if we do make a profit in future, that money will be re-invested into our community. 25% of our Patreon income is distributed in a monthly royalty to our 75 core models, 60% of the Patreon income goes into running our online sessions & commissioning new photosets and 15% goes into all of these things:
Model hardship fund – we give grants to life models in financial need to cover unexpected travel costs, bills and funding investments in new work equipment.
Sick pay – Patreon allows us to pay sick pay to models & tutors at Draw for in-person and online classes, helping to set a more compassionate precedent for freelancers and ensure that all of our crew have time to recover when they are ill.
Sponsorship – we sponsor other drawing groups and initiatives aimed at increasing diversity in life drawing communities.
Portrait & Urban Sketching clubs – Patreon funds free in-person portrait drawing sessions in Brighton, offering an accessible opportunity for people to draw for free in a welcoming environment.

That's it for this term! Thank you all so much for your support keeping Draw running and helping us keep our community of models and tutors fairly paid. I'll look forward to seeing you all online soon.
Warmest wishes,
Jake
